Unhappy 85.5 N/A 944 engine dead. What now?

Hey there,

My 944's bottom end is siezed up, and before it did the car started to burn oil. I'm beginning to think that this engine was mistreated by the previous owner and I am looking into buying a rebuilt motor. Anyone have any thoughts on any of the companies selling complete engines out there (i.e. Huntley, Anderson, etc.)? Is there a better route to take on this?

P.S. - I wouldn't mind a increase in the h.p. while I'm at it

Thanks for your help during this rough time I'm going through.

I hate to say this but....

Search "Anderson" and "Huntley" and look at the threads- it should make up your mind. IMHO any job worth having done is worth doing yourself.

Best of luck, and Welcome to Rennlist !

Anderson seemed to have some good reviews. Anyone out there currently running one of these with any input?

I was recently in a similar situation and have the following thoughts for you:
* easiest/cheapest/fastest way for more power is buy another car.
* engine swaps in general -- while a fun project -- is alot of work/money (but great if you're looking for something of sleeper car or a Q-car, especially if you're emotionally attached to your car). Remember that you may need more than just the motor. Do a search on "engine swap" and you'll get lots of info.
* if I had to go through the experience again, and if I had a garage in a house, I would consider pulling the engine, rebuilding it and dropping it (or a replacement) back in. 944na motors are fairly inexpensive and you'll get alot of satisfaction if the job goes well -- unless you want a bigger challenge. Plus, if it doesn't go well, you're not much worse off.

Just my 2cents.

Now your talking a 3.0 would be nice! Do you know what exactly is involved in the way of upgrades to perform such a task?

I just did a report of my swap: 968 engine swap. You'll find alot more info by searching old threads.

If you are not greedy for power, a 1988 2.5L from a 944 or 924S would give you a nice little boost (143 HP --> 158 HP,) while a 1989 2.7 L would give you power (163 HP) plus torque. Our cars have very solid bottom ends, so an engine swap would make more sense than a rebuild to me. Maybe refresh the head with a shave for compression and multi-angle valve grind, new rod bearings and seals, but not a big investment in cash. Make sure you get the DME with the engine.

There are a LOT of 944's out there- I looked at 2 - ran great but lousy interior/ exterior- could be had for about 1500 around here...

I've never been to newfoundland...

I caught the Targa Newfoundland on OLN earlier this year. Beautiful country to drive- and closed roads unlike europe..
