Download and install the V3.5 patch from my FTP:
http://members.shaw.ca/rsandor5/pu3.5.exe
Then, make sure you get all the downloadable cars as well.
GT2,GT3,959 and 928.

How good is need for speed?
Does it compare to gran turismo 3?
Can you modify the cars?
Is the racing realistic?
Are they tracks or out running cops on the highway?
etc, etc.

One of the best car racing games ever made! I am so addicted to it I have beat it three times already. Rich, You will want to buy the real version im sure because the downloaded version seems to have a lot of quirks.

It doesn't compare to GT3 in terms of sheer realism, but it's not a completely arcade-y racer either. The physics and racing are both pretty good (though after 4+ years of playing the computer AI is a complete joke). All of the cars are completely modifyable, except the racecars. Things like suspension, brakes, tires, anti-roll bars, intake, exhaust, turbo/super, intercooler, etc. are all available to buy. You can also tune the car slightly with downforce, tire pressure, toe in, ride height and stiffness, brake bias, and on the race cars the actual gearing.
There's two modes to the game. In Evolution, you start out in the 50's with enough cash to buy the first 356. You race to win money, upgrade your car, and buy new ones. There's damage, and even a used car market. Time progresses as you advance through the different competitions, until you finally reach the 2000 996TT.
In Factory Driver mode, you take on the role of being a factory driver (duh!). There's things like 'beat-the-clock' delivery missions, skidpad testing, and racing against your coworkers. When you're doing deliveries and racing they'll be cops and other traffic, but the cops don't try and pull you over, they'll just hit you. Kinda cheap IMHO.
For some reason, unlike other NFS's, there's not tons of downloadable tracks and cars. Maybe it's just something to do with the way the game's coded and the models and such, but most of the NFS's have a bunch of custom cars and tracks. Extra cars and tracks for this NFS are just re-skinned and have their performance "modded" (editted).
It's a great game, and well worth $5-10. But only on the PC. I played the PS version......ewwwwwwwww.

Doesn't sound quite as nice as GT3. I like just being able to grab a car from my garage, from an F1 to my 83bhp Suzuki and go find a race.
I would like more Porsches though, not that I don't enjoy my 1082lb-ft 993Turbo, but I'd like more than three Porsches to choose from (especially a silver '87 951!).
