Anyone using a Magnaflow Exhaust? (n/a)
As the subject says...
I have been playing around with my exhaust more than I care to admit, and recently I have had "gasket and hangar reliability problems". Loud is cool, but I couldn't even hear myself think at Mid-Ohio this last weekend.
So screw the Flanged cat with a dynomax and so-forth, I'm getting it all re-done and fully welded up, and am not 100% happy w/ the current muffler.
Magnaflows sound great on VW VR6s and I will continue that program next year!
And on another note, I may have a track ready flanged cat w/ test pipe and dynomax muffler 2.5" for sale soon! I even have a Flowmaster ready to go as well .
TIA

PSUice944,
I had a magnaflow put on my 87 N/A about a year and a half ago and I really like it. Sounds more "racy" than stock, but not "ricy". A nice deep tone. I kept it simple though and didn't change to a high flow cat or larger diameter piping, I didn't think I would really see that much benefit. Hope that helps.

Howdy. I just had a magnaflow muffler put on my 84 n/a. I also had a high performance free-flow cat and all new stainless steel piping put on at the same time. It still doesn't sound like my v-8 with flowmasters, but it's definitely throatier than stock. The only time it get's 'ricey' would be when you're free-revving it or if you run it up over 4 grand in gear before shifting. Overall, i'm pretty pleased with it though. Plus, the polished stainless looks nice.

Better/meaner than stock is good. My car hasn't been "normal" since before I bought it...
And when I let it rip, YES I DO want everyone else to know it!
Now the follow up question on SIZE:
How big/long goes back there? I don't have a stock muffler for comparison.

Hmmm, i'll have to measure mine to be certain, and it's at the shop right now getting detailed, but i'll check it out when I get it back and let you know. Because of the high performance catalytic converter mine may have a slightly different sound, too.

I have an '88 944 N/A. Which Dynomax muffler did you have? I'm junking a Super Trapp that I was told was the thing to use. I about went deaf with that setup too. According to the dyno guy, whoever said they were good on cars should be shot They are either too restrictive or too loud with no real happy medium. I've been steered away from the Flowmaster by a muffler dealer that sells them. He did not recommend it for the Porsche. Too much like a hollow tin can sound and had a customer try it only to dump it for a stock unit. I have a Bursche (spell?) header and free flow cat already in place. I'm hearing the dynomax 17747 is the one to use. Tired of the muffler merri-go-round. I just want a good comprimise between free flow and deep sound without the ricey bee in a tin can headache.

The magnaflow is kind of a custome type thing... still have to figure out the size.
The Dynomax I have is (I believe) the 2.5" Super Turbo. I also have the good 'ole 40 series Flowmaster. Nice at idle and a unique sound with it, but yes, done with a gear and it rings between shifts.
I want to try the Magnaflow for the "growl" it is supposed to promote, versus the muffeled performance note the dynomax gives me.
What style is that "17747"? Straight through perforated?

The 17747 is the Super Turbo in 2.25 pipe. It's an oval with the perfed pipe curving twice inside before exiting not just a straight perfed pipe. I like the low cabin noise but a rumble outside. With the current set up I have, it sounds like a '68 Cougar I used to have with a V8 and Cherry bomb mufflers that ended in front of the rear axle. LOUD. Without the V8 rumble. When you say the Dynomax is muffled, is it like a louder version of the stock muffler or does it have a hint of performance to it without waking the dead? Is the cabin noise low?

I wish I could sell you my 2.5" Dynomax! Oh well...
I would have to say it sounds somewhat serious. At idle I notice a definite throaty sound and as the revs increase, the note increases. There is no way our engine can sound like a ricey fart-can, but this muffler does have a similar harmonic sound... meaning one solid note exiting the tailpipe. Many other cars and other mufflers have a few "sounds" exiting the exhaust at one time, and that growly snarl is what I would love to have, personally.
So, no it doesn't sound like a V8, doesn't sound like a cheerybomb (I would know that too), doesn't sound like a ricer, and doesn't sound stock when you hit the gas. It sounds like a performance exhaust that isn't stock.
I'm pretty sure I'm going to investigate the costs of these Magnaflows and if decent, I'm going with that. Maybe I'll even set up my exhaust with another that is straight though and interchangable with my other mufflers! Hey, I've got em, why not since no one else is too interested!
