I cant help to think that the rattle i get at 3100 and 3400 rpm's is the muffler. I had a mechanic hear it and he said the same thing. He said i needed to get it thightend, you guys have the same problem on the stock muffler? (87 944n/a)

hehe, no problems with the muffler being loose. however, you may want to check the heat shields under there. they are aluminum and easily bendable when someone's doing some work under there. if its bent too close or not bolted properly it will rattle at certain RPMS as the exhaust hits it or creates resonation. crawl under there and take a look.

It could be muffler, heat shields, loose pipes etc. One way to find out is to smack parts with a rubber mallet or something. Tightening connections can work too. But there's no way to say for sure which part it is without looking.

The resonance of the vibration -- frequency -- can be traced to the size of the shield that is loose.
From under the car with any airflow pans off, look at the heat shields over the engine mount on the passenger side. This is a very small shield compared to the others and does vibrate at the 3,000 interval.

When my stock muffler was pulled, chunks of the cat were rattling around in it...looked like someone through black rocks in my muffler. It only did it audibly at certain RPMs.
