Default Are all 944 n/a slow????

Well Sunday was a bust. The guy really built his car up on the phone and through email. I drove 3 hours to meet this guy. When I pull up the drivers fender is two colors it had been wrecked and he repaired it. There was a vertical line half way down the fender where he had resprayed with another color. The bumper was trashed. The car was filthy. I can't even begin to tell you all the problems. Even worse when I drove it the air conditioner belt broke. I felt bad and stayed for two hours to help him. Then I just left.
I spent 12 hours cleaning and fine tuning my car for this jerk and he didn't even wash his. He lies about the condition. Heck while we were driving he wouldn't shut up about how much he liked the car. How good it was and how well it drove. On that note. It shook at 65 very bad. It felt really loose. Kind of like an old Cadillac. Don't even get me started on the power. It was a 5-speed and he bragged how quick it was. Man this thing was a dog. It didn't start pulling at all until I was half way through 3rd. He just sat there and grinned. When we returned to the meeting point I told him lets take a ride in my car and see what he thought. I just wanted to rub it in at this point I had no intentions of trading for this car. We take off on the same stretch of road My car is tight and responsive. I tell him to get on it hard at the same turn around spot as in his. My car is an auto 2.3 liter with basically same power and torque as a 944 1989 model. Back to the story. He floors it and the wheels cut loose and spin for a bit and then chirp in 2nd and 3rd gear. This guys face just dropped he couldn't believe how much more power and agility or control this car had over his. I was the one smiling now. So any way we go back to his car and take it to Oriellys and get a belt. This guy still wanted to trade me and didn't understand why I wouldn't. My car is far from stock with nearly 2 thousand in suspension. 1300 in wheels and tires, Cold air intake and exhaust and several other things done to the car. Hell he didn't even have a C.D. player.

Sorry about the rant. You all have no idea how much I want a Porsche and I thought this was finally it. Man was I wrong. I would have had to dump probably 10 grand in that car just to get it to the condition my car is in. Mine is 11 years old so its not new but I take care of what I have. Why I asked if 944's are all slow this is the 4th one I have driven all 5-speeds and my automatic honda has out powered and out handled all of them. All the 944's have had basically the same feel that one did. I have driven a 1500 dollar car to a 9000 dollar 944 and still the same. Can some of please tell me what it is that makes you like them so much. Have I just had the bad luck of everyone of these cars being a poor example of a car little lone a Porsche? I am really down in the dump on this. Does anyone near Miami Ok. that has a 951 or an S2 care to give me a ride? I need to see how these cars drive and handle before I give up my dream of owning a 944 series car.

The shake at 65 mph can be fixed with new shocks. I did this on my 84 daily driver and it felt like a whole new car.

Yes the 944 does not have that much power. Yep a honda might seem to out accelerate. That has to do with gearing.

With 150 hp these cars are not powerhouses. They are great handling cars however.

M758 I was surprised at the shaking. I thought maybe wheel balance. But is was loose. I looke at the shocks he had Koni Yellows. I have had them on other cars. These just had to be worn out. Those are great shocks.

methinks take both to the track(well one thats running right... care to put it up against mine?) and the 944 will come out on top. no offense, but for what you spent on the honda i'll almost guarantee that you'll make a 944 faster. be it spent on suspension or on track seat time, the 944 is a superior automobile.

No, he's not a troll, just naive .

For an even trade for your Honda you're not going to find a 944 in good condition.

The NA is no rocket but it sure is a quick, superb handling car.
I have had 2 of them and I would sure take it over an automatic Honda.

Hey! I traded my Pontiac Bonneville for the '44! I mean, it wasn't in fantastic condition when I got it but it's not a huge POS. Sometimes you just get lucky, that's all. Just remember, it never hurts to try.

8 valve 944s aren't all that peppy. Look for an S, S2, or turbo. You'll be impressed. I have an Acura RSX-S (basically a Honda civic with standard leather seats and a sport suspension) with 200bhp and a 6-speed manual (it performs great), but it feels like a minivan compared to my turbo.

Ag, you're a loser!!!... mine is plenty peppy, and your car is also an 8 valve... check the stats man!

lol... roberto, the 968 is really the 944S3, sounds like you have a 944S2.5

they arent fast, especially by today's sport car standards,

but they are quick enough to be fun, and sure footed, it sounds like you found a few bad 944's

sounds like you might be a 951 guy, or at least an 944 S, more power to ya, same great handling

I would prefer an S2 coupe as my favorite 944, just cause it did so much without a turbo.

Just keep looking, eventually you'll find a 944 that you will like

Well first of all you didn't mention which Honduh you have.

But I have yet to see one that has a lower center of gravity, and as wide of tires than a 944. Simple physics means the 944 has an advantage in handling. Except maybe against a CRX which also has a super short wheelbase that helps. But no Grocery getter in semis stock form is going to be at a 944.

Acceleration wise is a different story, no one says an NA 944 is going to beat much of anything.

But I think part of your problem is percieved handling. THe 944 handles so well you don't notice how fast your going. I regularly take off ramps twice as fast as other people (Incluiding Honduhs) and it doesn't seem like I'm doing anything special.

The other point is brakes. Hell a 944's rotors are almost as big as your wheels. I would say OUr back rotors are as large as your fronts, and your your rears are about as big around as a dixie cup. (stock)

All said and done. If you ever get a 944 and drive it on a regular basis you'll see the difference.

And yes I drove a Honduh on a regular basis.

A major point my prof. made today was that Japanesse cars are seriously under-braked for the amount of power they have or people make them have.

Another major point, a better driver will beat a higher power car, within limits, of course.
