Default Best source for rebuilt steering rack?

Need the replace a leaking PS rack on my 86 NA. Don't want to spend $1800 on a rebuilt ZF but want something quality that won't start leaking again next month. Any recommendations?

Auto zone used to have the rebuilt racks, they ran out a while back but it may be worth calling on. They were 199. I put one in my 944S and it worked great.

I have a set of inner tie rods from them on both my cars, going strong for several years now and tight as a drum. Good prices, great customer service. They have a long history of rebuilding ZF racks in BMW's. Rebuilt racks for our cars are 230 dollars, not sure if that includes a set of inner tie rods but I got mine for 85 dollars from them. Beats the hell out of an autozone rack. Give them a call.

PS: The rebuilt power steering pumps too.

Thanks, did order through Jorgen. The rack did not include the inner tie rods, will they be a requirement when installing a new rack?

You'd be silly to not replace them while you're in there IMHO. They're under 100 bucks from jorgen for the set, go ahead and get them, and get new tie rod ends too since they cost less than 20 bucks for the pair.

Cardone rebuilds racks, or at least use too.

Great thanks. My motor mounts are starting to become tired, well they are 13 years old actually, so this might be a good time to replace them as well?

Having the steering rack removed doesn't really get you any progress towards changing the motor mounts, except that you'll have the car jacked up already and be working in the same area.

Detroit axle sells them on eBay, haven't purshased one from them but have bought all sorts of other wheel bearings and such items over the past few years through my workplace. Quality seems to be Moog equivalent on other parts, and they aren't terribly priced. Looks like lifetime warranty when you send back your core. Something to look into myself when I need to replace mine. I've learned to stay away from autozone stuff over the years, and am not a fan of a1 cardone reman ps pumps as they seem hit and miss. Just my .02

My power steering rack started leaking after I replaced my engine mounts. I think when the cross member was lowered, taking the rack with it, the shafts extended past their normal operating range and damaged a seal. I can see the benefit of doing them at the same time. Car is in the air, front wheels removed, sway bar removed and both parts have similar life expectancies.

Agree, used a Zims rack on the 944 several years ago, and just purchased from them again for the 968.
