New guy on the block with a new car.
Hi, im new to the forum, i just got a 87 944 n/a (my first porsche) with 80K miles. The guy that had it had it for 15 years and he was on oxygen and couldnt have it anymore because he had a hard time getting in and out of the car. I got it for 4000. It does not have any leaks, he had the timingbelt changed at 60K and done all the maintenance on it. He also bought genuine porsche stainless stell 16 inch wheels for 950 each(i checked it out on the net and he was telling the truth about the price). Anyway......I need some advice. I changed the sparkplugs to the dual platinum tipped bosch. I changed the air filter to K&N(like the stock airfilter model) and i have been putting premium fuel in it and some fuel injector cleaner(chevron techron) and i changed the oil at a dealership and they put valvoline. Well im going to drain the oil here in about 2 weeks and get Mobil 1. Also getting redline tranny/differential oil changed in a couple days. Well as you can see i got some things set up for the car to baby it. Anyway, what kind of muffler can i get for it. I think the current one has a leak and i can hear a rattle when im at about 2800 rpm's(think the muffler is a little bit loose). The tip of the muffler is also a little bit rusted. I checked the car over when it was on the lift getting the oil change, not one pice of rust, also checked the engine and not one leak. ANY ADVICE WOULD BE GREAT.
One thing i have noticed driving this car is how awsome it handels. I work at a dealership so i get to drive a lot of nice cars but for a car that is 16 years old this thing is amazing. The car just feels so solid, even when you shut the driver door. Hey, thanks for reading this and please let me know if you have any adivce.

Welcome! Regardless of mileage/age MAKE SURE the timing belt and water pump are okay. IF either of those go so does your engine. Age is as much an enemy as miles. Also, concerning the rattle at 2800 rpm, I have one at about the same, maybe closer to 3000, and did much investigation short of bringing in to the shop, and what I've been able to discern is that my rattle is the gear idler. The transmissions on this car are mechanically loud, get used to it. Before you spend $$$ on a new exhaust, make sure that's it, besides there are some things that may need to be done first, though w/ 80k it shouldn't be too much if it was properly taken care of. These things include clutch(very expensive job) which has a rubber center aka 'rubber donut,' wheel bearings, CVs, hoses, etc. Other's will add I'm sure. Congratulations and welcome again. This board will help you immensely with any problems you may have and even those problems you don't have YET.

thanks for your input, i got to say though, i am very impressed with the shape of this car. The guy had the water pump and the timing belt changed. I took it out for a drive last night for about 1h and the car is just really dependable. Everytime i put the keys in i KNOW its going to start up and idle great. It handels awsome and just plain out is a good car. Anyway, if i do get any problems im sure you guys would give me some advice. Right now my main concern is just to baby the motor, put premium gas in it, put some injector cleaner, chenge the tranny/diff oil etc.

i will, ill get some before and after shots, im getting the car painted (original color black) and putting the turbo look bumper on. Ill take some pics of it today after work and the some pics in about 2 weeks when its done. Man i cant tell you how nice this car drives for a 16 year old car. Its awsome. And i dont go crazy on it. I took it up to about 5600 rpm's last night on second and third shift but rarely do that. I usually shift at 3000 just to be good to the motor because i want it to last without any problems.

As long as the belts are cool, you can rev the engine all you want, these cars are made to do so! As long as PM is done these cars seem to last forever. There are many 924/44s out there with 100k,200k,even 300k and running as daily drivers.

If you keep up with regular maintenance, these cars will give nothing but many trouble free miles. It may seem expensive at first, but when that $1200 head rebuild comes around because you didn't check the belts regularly, it bites... hard.

Just a note:
Don't bother with premium gas, 87 octane is enough (if not the best) for an N/A. Anything more than that is really just throwing money away, as well as causing a loss of a little HP.
Once the engine is warmed up (oil pressure around 3bar at idle), feel free to rev that baby up to redline all you want. It's not gonna hurt it . Just be careful of that clutch, it's about a $1500 job and while the clutch disc on these is strong, the clutch center is real weak.
The rattle is most likely the transmission, no real "fix" because it's not really a problem. The new gear lube might quiet it some.
I know you said he replaced the timing belt, but do you know when? It's a 30k/3 year part with the waterpump being a 60k/6 year part.

Welcome, both of you. Two black 87's!
I had an '88 before I sold it and eventually wound up with my S-2. Anyway, I highly suggest hitting the highway, gradually gaining speed in third gear till you hit 4k RPM--then STAND ON IT! The engine revs to 5-6k, and makes the coolest sound. And the torque really kicks in at 4k!
Enjoy...and check this list for parts suppliers. You can get almost ANY part you need for these cars, even after 15 years!
