Default Chipping a 944

Performance products has a chip designed to run on 93 octane, has anyone tried this? Do these things provide enough performance to be worthwhile?
thanks for any input.

I have no experience with that chip, but I'm guessing it is a rehash of the Weltmeister chip which seemed to be a rehash of the Autothority chip which I have in my car right now. Basically seems to move the power around but doesn't seem to add much of anything. I also have used the EuroProducts chip in the past which really didn't seem to do much at all.

I think the user called M758 (I think his real name is Joe) has some info on his sight regarding mods to NA used in spec racing including dyno sheets. I don't recall any of the performance chips really adding much in the way of power.

It's most likely the same Weltmeister chip I purchased, but I never got the chance to install. But I've Weltmeister to be on the best manufacturers of chip for the 944. You might want to see what other choices you have, but this is a pretty good chip from what I've heard.

It's like $400.00 right? That's $200.00 per HP. Don't bother. Put that money into sprucing up your suspension instead.

I agree.

If you look the chip data you can find out Europroducts 944 n/a chip is almost identical to factory original. Only rev limiter is moved about 500 rpm higher. That's almost everything they had changed.
I suppose chip alone can't do much with 944 n/a engine.

Have any of you tried Intercept LINK box?

I suppose with that box and some suitable Bosch MAF (found from most auto wreckers yards) you can have some nice results....
At lest here in Finland that LINK box is quite cheap, about 250 euros.Used Bosch MAF about 25-40 euros.

Estimate for any chip is about 2-3hp. I did see 944-spec car that got something like 5hp, but he seemed to be a few hp down to start with.

Check out my 944-spec page (link in my sig) for some dyno charts of 944-spec cars both with and with out chips.

I run a chip and might be giving me a couple HP. I have not had the chance to dyno since.

I was talking to my wrench about chips last week. (my 951 is chipped my 911 is not) He said, do not add a chip to the 911 and take it out of the 951. He used to be a big believer in the chips until he began to see premature valve problems only in cars with chips. Now, I don't know anything about the subject, but I do know the man. He is an older experienced mechanic that has been working on my european cars for the last 20 years. He has never been wrong.

The best chip for the 944 N/A is Danno's. Not sure if they are available to the public yet. You might want to try to e-mail him. Even with his chip you are only going to see an increase of 5HP though. This is compared to the 2-3hp you get from the other chip makers.

FRWilks chips produced less HP than Danno's on the Dyno. Ask Paul for a copy of the dyno sheets.

RF: i have a hard time beleiving that that man has never been wrong.

i'd wait to see what happenes with some of these chipped cars, i have a hard time beleiveing that valve wear is due to chips, rather than usage issues. if you have chips chances are you're going to drive the car harder, contributing to more wear. thats life!

i've got an '88 N/A and with the weltmeister chip in it. i did feel a difference in the car's response after putting it in, but that's probably due to the throttle response cam i put in the same day in any case, it sure didn't hurt, i plan on getting the car dynoed in the next month or two so i'll let everyone know how it went

You know for an S2 it lists that new chip as increasing the power from 208 to 224 (91 octane) or 228 (93 octane). That's nearly a 10% increase!
