Smile Hatch rattle mystery solved!! No, really!

I knew it!!

It's the damned cargo shade that's making all the noise back there! For some reason, when I roll it up, it makes a ton of noise, like it's bouncing around in the housing. When I un-roll it, it's quite for a while...then it starts acting up again!?

Is my retractor broken or something?? I miss my '88's lightweight one-piece cloth cargo cover that attatched at 4 points. This roll-up cover has been driving me insane!! I thought my glass was loose, my spare tire wasn't tight, my jack was loose...nope! Cargo cover!

Nothing sweeter than a 944 WITHOUT rattles! All you hear is engine!

Any suggestions??

Just invest in stereo equipment, when you hear a rattle crank up the volume until the rattle goes away , trust me it's easier and much less expensive.

I know what you mean Dave! Cranking Van Halen really makes the rattles go away! Of course, cranking the stereo also hides when you power steering pump falls off!

Hate that damn shade! Mine does not rattle, just wont retract POS.
Glad you found the rattle.

My sunroof rattles a bit when it's tilted open, drives me nuts.
All new gears too!

My shade works now. When I got the car, the P/O must have never used it, because it would just pull out, and stay out. Slowly, it started to retract. Now it works the same as every POS window shade!

If I could only figure out why it's rattling...!

I HATE rattles!

I used my shade once and it never fully retracted. I was irritated by it until one day it fell out. It's been sitting in the back of my garage ever since.

Problem solved!

One phillips screw in each end almost directly behind the rod where it goes into the plastic end caps.

When taking it apart, be careful. I took mine apart and the end caps disintegrated.

Haa! Very funny Woodpecker!

No, really. I got a new cover for my '88--but that was a split fold down seat version.

Andy, wow you were right. I removed the retracting shroud this afternoon and what a big difference! Its a good thing I found this thread or I would have been removing my hatch and re gluing the glass!!!

be careful, the back of the back seat is wood. thats why you cant mount a metal to metal fire extinguisher on the back of the back seat.
