Default Can I run this block?

I am in the process of building a turbo block for my 86 n/a. Yes suspension will be upgraded, and no, im not looking for someone to say "don't do it, buy a 951" ive made up my mind and im going for it.

I have 2 blocks available to me, would either of these be ok to run without bore, hone, and lap? the seller is trying to convince me its fine, but this seems a little sketchy to me. I'm in denver and there are exactly 0 local shops that will touch alusil.

Block 1:

Block 1 cyl 3. Ate a valve judging by the piston

Block 2:

Block 2, cyl 2.

Can barely feel any of the scratches with a fingernail on either block.

actually the block # 1 looks fine, a 1 or 2 scratches even if they can be grab with the tip of your nail is not that bad. Do you have a picture of the piston, if the valve made contact with the piston you can always smooth the dent with a dremel.

Looking like bores are not straight and score will only get worse. You can sleeve the block or get it Nickasil coated at Millennium . Either way you will need new pistons and total cost will be $2,000 to $2,700. You may want to find a good running replacement engine.

I'm not an expert, but as stated by Kevin, I wouldn't accept anything less than perfect, and I would just assume you're going to have to make it that way with the services of a machine shop. You're block can be shipped and worked on by those that can do the work if there isn't anyone close by.

I had already read the second link, but the 1st was new to me, so thanks. Since i'm ultimately looking for 400+hp, im thinking an ls1 is unfortunately better power for money at this point....

An LS1 will cost you a LOT more than prepping a Porsche motor. If you want to go fast on a budget, just get a ~'00-? Camaro that already has an LS1, and build the heck out of it. You could go pretty quick around a track for not a lot of money. If performance was a priority for me, that's what I'd do.

If you look at the first pic you can see horizontal lines, as if the rings are riding a high spot in the cylinder wall. May be flat but i doubt those lines mean nothing.

that's the bottom of the chamber, and the horizontal lines are probably related to quality of the picture.

I REALLY like my 944.

Considering that i have already spent 1500 on this block, I might as well get rid of it, and go with $6000 for full ls1 swap rather than spend another $2500 minimum on just this block (not counting all the supporting bits like oil pan mods). Unless someone can convince me that its a really bad idea, or that i can run one of these. Also the only place that I personally have found that will do the work on the Porsche engine is LN engineering in IL. quoted $4k with new J&E pistons which sounds like a rip off for a 4 cyl to me. I'll give millennium a call tomorrow and see what they say. Anyone else recommend a reasonable and reputable shop? Especially one that wont push the repair cost over $3k with freight shipping?

Call Lindsey Racing, see what they can do for ya. They are in Oklahoma City, OK.

If you're even considering an LS1, you should go for the LS1.

Also, if you're planning on rebuilding your 951 engine the right way (replacing every single o-ring, gasket, bearing, hose, and sensor) then it's expensive, and the LS1 conversion's price doesn't seem so bad. Especially once you start doing other stuff like oil pan mods, crank mods, etc.
