Default Square tires for staggered 15" wheels

I have a set of staggered Fuchs in 15x7/8, but it looks like finding tires is getting really tough. They are for an N/A, so I'd like to get a square setup, and it looks like a 225 tread width is the correct width for running on both 7's and 8's. Any other tread width will be out of spec for the tire's rim width, but practically speaking, are there other sizes I should consider? They will principally be for street use in the mid-atlantic, so a high performance all-season is what I was hoping for.

Michelin defenders? Good all around tire. Good in the wet and snow. (Stuff No One Wants)...and in the dry. Not rated for high speed..Michelin pilots may do that for you. I have found IMHO, that the Michelins give about 2-3 MPG increase...just on my DD cars..

A squared up set up for the street is sort of a moot point.

One may find 215/60 - 15 inch tires if you search around for them, especially if you are considering an all season. The sizing which is harder to find the sizes in are the stickier, more aggressive tire.

Michelin Pilots are GREAT tires. I have them on one of my n/a 944s and on an Audi 200 Turbo. More than adequate for good all around daily use, and even some of the more spirited driving. They seem to have a fairly good response to signaling a driver when they are about to let go by sounding off via tire squeal, and the transition both into and out of a situation easily handled.

Continental also has these tire sizes as well as Yokohama, and the Yokos are VERY quiet and also competitively priced. Do a bit of searching before you waste your money on an 8 and 8 setup, as the one inch extra on the street is negligible if even discernable to most drivers.

Can I put the 215 on an 8 inch wheel? They all seem to say the size range for 215 is 6-7.5". I already have the staggered Fuchs. I agree the square setup isn't that important, but I would still need to choose something that is available in appropriate sizes for both front and rear.

I have 215/60R15 on 15inch 7/8 Fuchs too.

Running falken ze912, not really impressed of dry grip. Wish I have 225/50R15 instead (for some reason 50 below has lower TW). But 215/60R15 look just perfect on 944 with the fuchs.

I'm looking at the Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 94H in 215/60-R15. They are basically the only performance option besides the P6000 at $225 each. I also see that the Falken ZIEX ZE950 A/S is available in the same size, but can't find much info about it.

Look at the rh door jamb and in your owner's manual.
This is the size of tire which came on both yours and my '84 - 944s.

This was the standard fitment for 7 and 8 inch FUCHS wheels in a 15 inch size.

I bought an 88 with 16x 7 and 8 inch staggers and the PORSCHE dealer actually had put on 255 series tires on the car for the previous owner !

I think they are too wide altho they fit, but the car doesn't handle any better than the smaller 15 inch with standard fit tires. It actually feels cumbersome instead of knife edge sharp and tossable like my '84 car.
Folks are learning there are proper fits without going to extremes. Remember, Porsche developed and also RACED these cars back in the mid 80s with what came on the cars we bought. And they did VERY well. Winning many races at various tracks and in numerous series with the same car you and I drive. Just set up with more aggressive wheel alignments, heavier bars, and lowered suspensions.
An entire series known as the BF Goodrich Team T/A was formed to just market this 4 mm semislick tire to the US crowd. I ran many sets in D.E. events back in the day and they were very close to the Yokohama A008 and TA/R tires which were the dominant rubber to run. I loved the Yokos as well , but got many more events out of the BFG rubber. All were 215- 60/ 15 rubber

Those are the ones I have, except I have the previous version P01. They're ok. I just daily drive them. They were reasonable at $92 each and lasted 4 years 34k miles. I need new ones. The rears are worn.

Default same issue

I now have an '84 NA with the Fuch 7/8 staggered wheels. It currently has some terrible 215/60 tires on it - flatspotted or slipped belts and they slide like hell in the wet. I've been looking for tire options as well.

The 215/60 handles ok front/back, but looks a bit narrow on the 8" wheels. I can post pictures if you would like. I could not find a 215/225 pair in the same brand.

Let me know what you find out. The idea of 225 all around may end up being a good option. I use the car as a 150 mile a day commuter on the highway at 75 mph. So I am not looking for 10/10ths performance. I put some Yokohama YK 580 tires on a 924S I had and they were great for what I drive. Good in wet, quiet, good ride, and handle well at 8/10ths. At 30K on them they were 30% worn.

I decided I really want to go with a true summer tire, and I found that 205/55-R15 and 225/45-R15 are the only 15" sizes available in the 7-8" wheel range. The 205s are all Ultra-High Performance and the 225s are all Extreme Performance. I am going to go with the Yokohama S.Drive 205/55-R15 since the diameter isn't as far off of oem and treadwear won't be as bad. I looked at pictures of 205/55 on 8" wheels and there isn't really any noticeable stretch, so it shouldn't be obnoxious. Down the line, I may get a set of Extreme Performance to put on my cookie cutters and just use for autox and track.

I had 205/55 R16 on my 8" fronts and they were OK.
Once we test-fitted a 225 on the 9" rear and that looked bad.

That being said, I'd like to try the car with a 7/8 set up, 'cause it's much lighter.

I am needing new tires for my 1984 944. The label on the door jam is gone. They have 15” Fuchs rims. It seems like there’s not a lot of options for tires. I’m guessing that rims are 7” in front and 8” in back?

Current tires are Goodyear Eagle GA 215/60R15 93V. Prob only have 10,000 miles on them but they’re not in good shape, old. When I had these put on, I first told the shop that I didn’t care about the tires and they put some skinny tires on, just didn’t look right to me.

Is there any options without spending $1200 again on tires? From looking on the web, it’s hard to find that size tire for 8” wide rims. A quiet ride would be more important that sticking to the road. Looks like the Michelin Pilots are no longer available.

There are quite a few tire options in that size, they are just all all-seasons. I arrived at the Sumitomo HTR A/S P02 as the best bang for your buck, unless you really care about winter performance, in which case you should go for a regular touring tire. 215s will fit fine on 8" rims (that is the oem size after all).
