In my defense I had been distracted during the fueling process. Then I had to go inside the station and when I came out my friend already had his car started and was waiting by the exit to leave. Still no excuse........
After I did it I got out to assess the damage and a guy at the pump next to me told to just leave. That this is what he had done once.
I went into the store and told the very busy female attendant. She said "Just get out of here" when I offered to pay for the damage. Later I realized that they have my credit card as the last transaction on that pump so they can get me if they want.....

I've done it before because they do that bull**** where they make you go in and pay after dark before you can fill your tank, and I was so conditioned to pumping, paying, and driving off in that order.

I felt really stupid, then a friend told me that he did it years ago and destroyed the whole punp with gas spraying out everywhere and just drove off before they could stop him.

Here in S. Ca., they never let you pump, pay, and drive off. You always PAY FIRST, pump, then drive off. I guess too many deadbeat pumpers here.

Hey Legoland,
I'll be in Orange county next week and could probably meet up with you then. Do you really have a spare filler tube? How much of a production is it to replace?
TIA

A friend of mine recently drove cross country from Ca to NY. I think his gas cap found a permanent new home on a pump in Nevada somewhere.

PM me and I will give you my phone number. It is a little work to remove so I will try to find one that is already off the car. If not, we will have to look.

On my way home the other day there was a young lady in a Firebird (96-99) and one the rear wing was her wallet, damn thing didnt move for like 30 miles. She finally got my point and realized I wasnt a highway stalker or some such and pulled over to retrieve it.

I have a simular story many years ago...so dont feel bad.
I meet a bunch of guys every Thursday for a bike ride and I
throw my bike up on the roof rack of my blazer. My wife askes if
I can drop our daughter off at church on the way...sure, no sweat.
Our church has a covered area by the doors and guess what I did...
Yep, ripped the bike off the roof rack and then backed back over it.
Tore up my bike, the roof rack and busted the rear window on the Blazer.
I refuse to use roof racks to this day.

I just stand at the pump and do the pumping myself instead of flipping the little thing so it automatically fills it up. So hopefully this never happens to me, but I wouldn't doubt if it did one day lol. I'm a forgetfull type.

Is the filler neck the same on the early cars. I am parting out a car right now and you can get the filler neck cheap if you want it.

I used to alway put the cap on the spoiler when I was filling up. One day I was checking the oil and forgot about the gas cap, hit the hatch release botton walked around the car just in time to see the hatch go up and the cap fall off. It took a nice piece of paint off as it smacked the rear fender. I thought I was going to fall out I was so mad.

I did - auhumm,well- the same thing Black bird did in my company car, some ricers saw this getting gas @next pump and hysterically laughed at me -and rightly so- I went inside to tell the attendant, the kid came out to have a look (he was puzzled)- the pump handle was gone! We then saw the ricers (in true ricer stylZ fartcan away) I went back @ next fill-up and attendant said "Hey man, we had it on camera, cops got e'm for theft an' made parents return it !! haha- then I had my Laugh !!
