Lightbulb Time for Tires, Suggestions Please

Well couple days ago was driving back to the apartment from the new home and was wondering why the steering was so hard, thought it was just because it was late and I was tired. Well the next day lo and behold, I found a low left front tire due to a screw that decided to embed itself into the tire and go for a ride. Well put wind in the wheel, got a plug patch in for the time being, but I really don't feel comfortable driving arround in a sports car with a plugged tire. Also the Nitto's that are on the car where on it when I bought it, tread still there but alot of dry rot cracking between the tread blocks. So I guess it time for new rubber. Priced Bridgestone
RE950's at the local Firestone store. $112 each! Tire rack wants $85, even with shipping I still would come out ahead. Still got shopping to do but was wondering what you all thought of them or some other options.
Got the standard 7j x 15 Cookie cutters, cant afford new rims right now, just bought a house, so got to stick with the standard 215R60-15's right now or maby 225R55-15's if there is such a thing.
Any Ideas all?
Bill.

I love my Bridgestone RE950's. I've never used them on the track (I use a set of Yoko AVS Intermediates). However, I've pushed the car pretty hard around curves on the street, and the tires have impressed me. Last winter we had a lot of snow where I live, and for the past year we've had a lot of rain. The tires have been great in slush and heavy rain. Of course, I drive more conservatively on slushy or wet roads, but I've been impressed.

I got the tires from the Tire Rack, and I have always been impressed with their service.

I have an 86 944 n/a and currently have kumho 711"s and they are awesome! They are very cost effective and have traction AA and temp A and 45k mile rating. I have had the re 950's also but I like these better and they are alot cheaper! They grip like you wouldnt believe! John

Go with 225/50/VR15. Perfect fit.

Oh I forgot! I have 225/50/15 but they do make 215/55/15 in the kumho 711's but this profile is great for cornering!

Since you live in FL I'd consider the RE-750, if it's available in your size. It is supposed to be 95% of an S-03 without the harshness of the S-03. I ordered a set for the WRX today. After I mount 'em up I'll edit this post and let you all know how they are. (I know, rice AWD is different from German RWD but it'll at least be a data point.)

In the WRX size the 750 is about $10 cheaper than the RE-950...

The RE-950 is not at all a performance tire. If cost is of great concern, the Khumo 711's are a great tire. Heck, how can you complain at under $50 a tire? If you can spend the money, go with the Bridgestone RE750's. Or if you want the ultimate in street performance and can live without driving in the rain, use the Falken Azenis Sport. $74 for a 205/50/15 and you will swear it is a full bread race tire. BTW this is the tire of choice for SOLO II street class cars.

Thanks for the input guys. Well the 944 being my daily driver here in south
Florida, a tire that is super in the rain is a must. Will look into the others mentioned. Tirerack ratings for the RE950 were tops in the 215-60-15 size
is the main reason I was looking at them, but still open to others.

I had 225/50/VR15 Falken Ziex 512's on my old 85.5 944. They were around $65 each and I was very impressed with the performance. They were very good in the wet and dry.
I currently have Kuhmo Ecsta Supras on the S2 and I'm not impressed with them at all. The next tire I buy will be Bridgestone S-03's.

As I said in another post regarding tires - my opinion is as follows:

If you need a high performance street tire for a warm weather area choose one of these two tires:
1) Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3
2) Bridgestone Potenze Pole Position S-03

I have owned many brands and tested many tires. These are the two best tires for the conditions (listed above) that I have seen.

(as always) YMMV,

S-03s are super in the rain and the dry. They're definately not cheap though..for my 225 and 255 x 17's it was $877...ouch. After driving with them though no other tires seem nearly as good, especially in the wet! You can run through like 3" of water and barely notice it.

fishey, I've got those tires, and they are okay in the dry weather, but if it rains those sp5000s are all over the place. THey are worse than the Yokohama A008P's were. Those were AWESOME tires as long as you dont expect them to last long.
