1-4 gears are ok and I can actually be on 2000 rpm on 4th gear and still have good pickup. But somehow the 5th gear seems a little bit too tall. I end up not really using the 5th most of the time and only use it on the freeway when there is no traffic. The car feels like it will stall and has no pickup below 2500 on 5th. Is it just me or are your cars the same way?

You can't get into 5th under 70mph, that's exactly what it's designed for.
It's why are cars get such good gas mileage on the highway. I for one like it. If i'm doing spirited driving I don't go anywhere near 5th gear.
It's also why we have a top speed of 136 (more than that in your car) which is the same as a 5.0 IROC-Z, in our little dinky 4-banger.

I hate to tell you this, but that shift light has you shifting too early....
...for my tastes anyway..
But then again I'm either at the redline or at a redlight.

S2s were made after the whole oil crisis thing in the 80s where gas mileage mattered. Porsche only put that junk in there because they pretty much had to to sell cars at the time. Although I don't think 911s had them, but anyone who could buy 911s wasn't worried about gas prices. The 944 being the "low end" car for the "poor man" would worry about gas mileage.
