My car is NOT happy below 2000 at all. I try to keep it over about 2200 around town. NAs have a little less low end so they probably like to be a little higher in the rev range.

My '87 Carrera has a shift light, and I do worry about the prices of gasoline!

My 86 n/a has the light. It's a lighted arrow pointing up in the middle of the speedo (or tach, I don't remember). It lights when you are supposed to change gears for optimum fuel efficiency (or some such crap). The turbos don't have it - I guess they figured fuel economy was out the window on boost!

My S2 has no light!! I was really happy when I saw that, considering I hated my 88's light. Shift to 3rd at 1500RPM's?? Yeah, right!

I use 5th on the highway going 65...that's about 3k to me, I think. Why rev high on the highway, doing 65-70?

I think the 89 owners manual says something about keeping the motor revving at at least 1800 rpm or suffer rod bearing failure.

my brothers 84 NA has one, and the 86 RX7 I had had one. guess mazda copied one too many things from porsche.

now if there was on on my Z28 maybe i could get better than the 14/15 mpg i am averaging. and maybe get more life out of the tires too as an added bonus.

my shift light is just fine. it comes on when its needed... the problem with you all is you dont drive your car hard enough... seriously! the light comes on when you should upshift, the engine is being inefficient OR when its coming off the power curve at high rpms. at first when i got my car the light came on all the time, but i learned to drive the car(not by using the light, but by learning to actually drive) and now it hardly ever comes on. the car is made to accelerate, brake, and turn at higher speeds than you think you should. i don't beat my car but i do accelerate reasonably fast, and if you dont and you let the engine go to intermediate/high revs, the light WILL come on. porsche didnt design the light to be annoying, they designed it to make you an efficient driver.

No way! Mine came on at silly LOW RPM's, through normal driving. Sure, if you floor it in every gear, the light doesn't come on. But driving like that in light to light street traffic makes no sense.

There must have been something wrong with CASIS in your 88' Andy. CASIS on my 86' usually kicks in at pretty reasonable revs.

Yeah. I've noticed that it only comes on in 4th though when you get close to redline. Kinda nice. it's like the RX-7's warning buzzer when you hit redline. You hit it and it goes *BUZZZZZZ!!!*

Hey, I remember that buzz sound of the 1st gen. rx7 redline warning. It scared me at first because I thought the car was about to blow. After a few times, I got used to it. Talk about redline, I bought a 2003 yzf R6 at the auction today for $850 wrecked and the redline is somewhere around 14k......

Does anybody know the gear count on the 88 924S 5th gear? Have a shop who will look for one for me if I can find the count?

Thanks.
Dylan.

p.s. Not finding the count in my Search attempts. Finding lots of posts about 5th gear, just not the count?
