Hi, new here - Very confused about new wheels & tires for my '89 - please help
Hey guys, what a great resource these forums are. I bought my 89 automatic in 1993. For a lot of reasons I didn't drive the car from 2000 until March of this year, when I took it out of the garage. I spent a considerable amount of $$ fixing some problems, but now it's running like a champ again.
My questions have to do with putting new wheels on it. I need to put new tires on the car since the current ones are 9 years old! I figure I may as well put new wheels on it, since I've always hated the fact that my phone dials are discolored and have lost their finish.
I want to put some 17's on it, but I don't know where to start. I want something that will just bolt on, I don't want to play around with spacers or forcing something to fit. I have about $1,000 to spend on them. Does anyone have any suggestions? I checked out Ebay, but I've decided that I want a new set of wheels.
A friend suggested Tire Rack. For about $875 I can get the Mille Miglia Cup 1 wheels, 17x7.5 F, 17x9R. Any thoughts on these? They also recommend 205/50 Front and 255/40 rear sizes. How will these work? I'm thinking about the Yokohama AVS Sports, they have 4 for $566. This is what I have on the car now and they work fine.
Thanks

Welcome.
Those wheels at the tire rack look nice, the only drawback to them is that they are 1. fairly heavy and will impede performance and 2. bend/warp easily if you hit a bad pothole or irregularity. I think that you are better off getting a used set of Porsce-made cups or 993 wheels. Since your car is a late-model 944, almost all of the factory 17" wheels will fit just fine.
As far as tire size, the front is a little small for our cars. While that is the recommended size for a tailheavy 911 or a mid-engined boxster, I would suggest a 225/45 front tire. The rear is the perfect size.
One last thing. You may get a little rub on the drivers side rear inner fender lip with the 255's on the back. If you do, come back and tell us. There are fixes for that, too.
Welcome again!

Tifo is correct. The preferable method for your car is OEM Porsche wheels. Lighter and stronger and many times cheaper. Do go with the wider 225's in the front and I run 245's in the back. Neither should give you any fitment problems. As for tires I use the Yokahama AVSES100's and they seem fine to me.

There is another often-forgotten advantage of buying factory wheels over aftermarket ones: Five years from now, if you hit a pot hole and destroy a wheel, it's a lot easier to source a replacement factory wheel, versus an aftermarket wheel that went out of production three years before.
It may not be a significant risk, but it's still out there.

Thanks for the tips guys, I'm going to stick to Porsche wheels. I like the C2 Turbo wheels, I'll give Wheel Enhancements a call tomorrow. I hear they are a good place to buy from. Is there anyone else I should check out also?
What do you think of the Yokohama AVS Performance tires? I don't want to spend crazy money on tires, I won't be tracking the car or anything. Just some spirited street driving but nothing out of hand.

You can check with Wheel Enhancements, but you’ll find the price to be high. A much less expensive option is to call around to Porsche Speed shops in your area. Seems there are always a set or two of 993 Cups laying around. I got mine from Viking Motorsports in Stafford, Texas. At the time they had four or five sets of wheels. The 993 Cups I purchased were $800 for the set. They had less expensive sets, but these we’re the ones I wanted.

Oh yea,... I got the bucket. Nice one, too.. with all sorts of cleansers. BIG *****. I used to use a 5 gal pickle bucket but no more. Also, I got a nice army blanket from some sleeper-overer.

Well I got some quotes today and no way in hell can I pop for the factory wheels. Mucho expensive new, a lot more then I thought. It looks like the replica's for me unless I can find a good used set.
