Wheel spacer question
After looking since July, I recently purchased an 86 Turbo. A few small issues aside I love this thing. It came with the 993 Cup wheels in 17x9 rear with 255-40's. Under hard boost it squats and slightly rubs the left rear tire on the fender lip even with a rolled edge. What was the OEM spacer dimension(rear) for the stock 16" wheel? I would like to narrow it by 1/2" to 3/4" but I'm not sure what size spacers to buy. Caliper clearance isn't an issue obviously. Any suggestions as to size and sources for the parts?
Thanks,
Steve

It has new Koni yellows, not sure about the current setting though until I can check. I really do think it's an offset problem though, they are just too wide I compared to others I've seen. I'll try to stiffen it up though and give it a try. Still if any one knows the dimension of the OE spacer I would like to get that info and investigate other options.

Ahh. Here comes the debate.......
This is quite common. It seems that the factory was always off a little bit on the left side. I say get the grinder out and grind off a little of the fender lip. Others will tell you to roll it.
Or, in your case, you could grind a little of the spacer away, like 1/4" maybe...

How about just take your wheel off and measure your current spacer? Subtract the amount of clearance you need and that's what your new spacer needs to be.

The factory did not install spacers on the rear of the 86 951. The common size to install to put late offset wheels on is a 28mm spacer. I'm running that spacer on the rear of mine and I have not had any rubbing issues.

I might be using the wrong word. The 993's are mounted to a hub shaped closely like the spoke pattern on the wheels. It's not an add-on type spacer like my 83. I guess I'll pull the wheel tomorrow and see what I have there; I just picked it yesterday so the 951 is all new to me. The edge is already rolled; I'm not sure it can take much more without losing too much strength in the flange area. Worst thing about it is not being able to drive it under hard boost until it's resolved. Thanks to all for the help.

Sounds like an aftermarket spacer, which will probably work fine. The factory spacers are round and marked with Porsche numbers. If I recall, the 28mm spacers on mine are off a 911. The front also requires a spacer with the common size being the 21mm spacer from the rear of an early 944 (83 and 84).

Well it looks like I won't be solving anything with spacers. The "hub-spacer" is cast into the wheel, attached directly to the rotor(i.e nothing I can do) I was able to get another 1/8" by grinding the C/L of the lip and filed it all smooth. Next is tightening up the Koni's and adjusting the rear ride height if necessary through the torsion bar. Right side is fine so far. I've never followed a 944 Turbo to see if it squats more to the left due to torque. I suspect the wheels are aftermarket 993 clones (made in Italy), they say ET 15 for the offset due to the built in spacer. It's like waiting for X-Mas, can't open the present, but it just sits there sparkling in front of you until the time is right!
Sorry for all the questions. Any suggestions for a good mellow cat-back muffler (Burch test pipe)without breaking the bank?

I have found that these cars are not "centered" in the rear. The drivers side always rubs when you go to some fat wheels in the back. I think the issue is the car, not the wheel.
Good luck!

Ah, it looks like you found your own answer. The ideal offset for the rear of an '86 951 is actually close to stock at 25mm. I run a 17x11.5" rear wheel with 275/40-17 tires and under full suspension compression, the tire will rub on the outside against the fender lip and on the inside on the inner fender simultaneously.
