Question Defrost causes a loud whiney noise.

I found this out this morning, after last night's october freeze, if I turn on my defroster front or back, the engine makes a loud squeaking whine noise.
When idle, its a constant rythem, but when I put on the gas, the rythem goes along with the engine. If I turn off the rear, or front defrost, which ever is on, it turns off, and only does it if they are on.
What could this be???

Belt to the A/C compressor? When you turn on the Front Defrost, it turns on the A/C compressor. The Rear (theory hear), the same belt goes to the alternator, turning on the rear defrost causes a larger electrical load which might kick your alternator into overtime if your battery is not at it's best. I would check the belt to the A/C / Alternator..

1986 944 non turbo, Automatic. I think I'm gonna set up my signature so I don't forget to put my year model and such. Anyhow, I just remembered this happening a while ago while using my AC, but would go away after I rev the engine, so I will definately check the AC belts, and such. Thanks for the information!!

It happened to me before I changed the AC/alt belt, it was pretty worn out. Turning on the fogs with the driving lights or the AC by itself also caused the whine.

I agree with stolarzj - ac belt. The a/c dehumiditize the air and the heat warms it so you have hot dry air to get rid of the damp cold frost on the windshield. When you turn it on, the fans go on along with the a/c compressor putting double load on the belt via alternator and a/c.

It could also mean the A/C compressor going south.
If you have a faulty compressor, then it will be forcing the belt, causing this winning noise.

Or alternator bearings? They sound like that too when on the way out.

Speaking of alternators.....

When I put on my heater, the lights get dim for a second and sometimes at night, my voltage meter reads right at 12 (normally it's at 13/14). It this a sign my alternator may be on it's way out?

Recently I'm also getting a "whirring" noise from the belts area. Could this be the alternator bearings????

Boyee, alternator bearing is a nasty screech, or it was with mine. Came and went, then came to stay.

See if your alt and PS belts are tight. If they're OK, have a look under the timing cover.
