Question OT: Recommendations for PC sterring wheel

I'd like to get a steering wheel for the driving games (NFS et.al.) and would like to hear what you are using.

I like the Logitech units designed by Momo. The all black wheel with both paddle shift and shift lever seems like a good deal $70.

What are you using and why do you like it?

Daniel (tired of using a joystick with NFS:PU........

I have the logitech forcefeedback for the PS2...never tried it on the PC though, since I have no PC race games. I'd recommend its PC version. It's got nice force feedback, it's accurate, it feels right, and the paddle shifters are nice.
Gran Turismo 4 will have lots of Porsches.

I recommend you get a Pole Position cabinet and let me teach you how to run a MAME box with it, then you get the REAL deal!

logitec "momo" wheel and pedals, feels and looks great, my wife suprised me with it for Christmas, no way I would pay $200 for a wheel. It's very solid and can be permanently mounted. The logitech unit for PS2 will work on a PC but the force feedback will not work, the Ps2 uses a usb connector.

I also bought the logitech with momo wheel with the paddles + shifter, and it works flawlessly with NFSPU. The force feedback can be surprisingly strong at times...

i've got a microsoft precision wheel. no force feedback, but it's a nice wheel. uses optical sensors instead of potentiometers to measure the wheel's travel, so it should last longer (since it doesn't have potentiometers to wear out). I've had it for about a year now, and the tension on the springs in the pedals and wheel are starting to get softer. other than that minor annoyance, it works great.
it does seem strange to me, though, that it's a MS wheel, and it still uses a driver written for windows 98. there is no driver for 2000 or xp. when you install the 98 driver, it warns you that it won't work, but then it does. Strange how badly MS supports their own products sometimes.

hey, ag951, where'd you hear that gt4 will have porsches?? that'd be awesome, but i thought EA games still had an exclusive worldwide license to put porsches in video games . . . . Or do you just mean that polyphony is using the Ruf dodge again, like they did in GT3 (i.e. since Ruf is considered a manufacturer instead of a tuner by the german gov. polyphony can include Ruf porsches without actually admitting that they're porsches)

I was originally looking at the Momo wheels because they seemed to have a lot of nice features but if the Wingman Force wheels work just as well, why spend the extra $$$.

I'm not sure if I'm going with E-bay on this. I like the security of returning locally if there are issues.

Matt,
What do you mean by 'Pole position cabinet' and MAME?

I read somewhere that they're going to have the GT2 and GT3 in GT4. I don't know if they're Rufs or real Porsches. I hope they're real, cuz I'd like to have some of the older ones (like 914s, 944s, and 951s) and some of the race cars that are true Porsches.

Also I don't think there are any pot-based wheels on the modern market. The pedals for most (all?) are pot-based, but the wheel mechanisms themselves are usually (always?) optical these days.

Edit:
A "Pole Position" cabinet would be the old stand up arcade machine you played PP on fifteen or more years ago.
MAME is an emulator for pixel based arcade games. My boss has PP on his pocket pc.

The thing I'm worried about is the company selling most of those is selling 'factory refurbished in non-retail boxes'.

Let me know how it works out.

Is force feedback THAT big of a deal to justify the extra $$$.

MAME is multiple arcade machine emulator and for the purpose of this board I have NO repeat NO ROMs only the Mame platform. The newest version of the MAME roms (illegally and immoraly pirated I add and I do not have them, really I promise) have the JAMMA HD's written onto DVD. You can play any game you want and by using a modified PP cabinet you would have all the inputs of an arcade game. Of course since MAME is done using a PC you can play multi etc, but you would have to access the rear of the cabinet.
