I second the volvo 240 series. The fun you can have in these things is unreal and it's almost impossible to kill them. I play Mr. Rally driver all the time in my 242.

How about the Suzuki Swift? I had one that was totalled just before I got my 944. It ran well, got great mileage, and I could beat the hell out of it!
Shame I had loaned it out; someone else totalled it.
But then again, I got my '83 944, happier with it, not too pretty, gets me from point A to point B, and I LOOOOOVE to drive it!

I would say go with the 1st gen (FB) RX-7. They are great cars. And, they don't go boom unless they are poorly maintained. Unfortunatly, they don't give you any warning before they do though. Like stated above, try to find a GSL-SE.

The early 80's Toyota Celicas and Supras are RWD and fun to drive..IF you can find a non-rusty example. My 82 Celica GT was fun.. but it rusted like mad.

BMW 325e, or i, if you can find it. My friend had his eta for 288k miles, thing still ran great. Decided not to keep it on the road, as they were replacing the major wear items for the 3rd time. He figured that it was time for a new car.
I loved my 325is. Good handling, and with Nokians, it was unstoppable in the NY winters. Truly insane. The only thing that limited it's ability was the limited ground clearance after lowering it. They don't make good snow plows. ;-)

just get an old corolla for like $30.00 and drill a hole thru the body into the catalytic converter. from here, you add a pipe with an oil bottle holder on it. That way, when someone tailgates you, you can squeeze the bottle and just smoke em out. Also, use the car for dukes of ahzzard style driving, ya know, jumping off cliffs and jumping over the bumps on a dirtbike track. Yeah. that could be fun. I want an old corolla.
