Default OT: Any ideas for a fun cheap beater?

Hey Guys,

Moneys tight again and unless I can find a decent NA for under $2000, I'll have to buy a cheap beater. Only thing is I want it to be RWD, Manual Tranny, and fun! Oh yeah, under $1200 too..any ideas?

I'm willing to spend more on a 944, but I'm gonna need this beater soon!

-Thanks!
Mike

Maybe an old RX-7? Nissan Z car? BMW? Compact pickup truck?

Depends what you're after I guess.

I had an old Z car (280ZX) I loaned it to my sister and now she managed to wreck it. ...RX-7 seems intresting

EDIT: It was also rusted to hell and back I'll have a hard time finding one in NY that isnt too bad...

Hard to find the 914 for that money, otherwise I would be driving one. 924s can be had in that range though. 1st gens can be good cars, they can be hard to start though. For 1200 you can probably get an abused second gen or for 1900 you can have my 90 vert. Paint sucks but the car overall is pretty good.

Cheap beater that is RWD is severly limiting criteria. I think you might be able to find a BMW 320i from the late 70's early 80's around that price. Might even be able to find a 325i around there too, but I have not priced those lately. Lots of fun FWD cars ie VW GTI/GLI that fit the bill.

I've always loved the old '82 honda civic hatchback. GREAT little car! You could get a nice one for $1200.

Sounds like you need to stick with 944s. I keep running across beater-quality examples in the price range you mention. Got an 83 sitting at the house I got that way right now. Usually, you have to do some work on cheap cars but that's half the pleasure of owning them to me anyway...

I'm actually wishing for a beaterish 944 to work on (as long as it doenst need losta $$$) but there arent ANY around here for a reasonable amount of money. Theres a 944 in the JUNKYARD in Poughkipsee they went 6K for. Needs a valve job, been sittign forever...I wish I could find some cheap 944!
