Default Distributor rotor issues

Hey guys, new to the forum but I have been having issues with my car lately and can't seem to find anything. It's an 88' 944s from Canada (not sure if that matters). Last week noticed that it didn't want to start, it would turn over and eventually start after giving it a bunch of gas. Got home and checked the distributor cap and the points were trashed. The rotor was also in bad shape. So got the new parts, Bosch rotor and "equivalent" distributor cap. Installed new parts and started it up. Started quicker than it ever had before but after a second or two noticed a banging coming from the distributor cap. Took everything off and saw that the rotor had knocked one of the points (#4 if that helps) sideways. Tried readjusting the rotor but nothing seems to work. I could really use some help this is the first Porsche I have owned
Thanks

Porsche did put out a TSB-technical service bulletin on changing/upgrading the cam gear bolt to a triple square.

More info:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...r-removal.html

I have seen "equivalent" distributer caps sell for $11.99 but have passed and only use a Bosch cap.

Maybe the cam and housing are worn. This is usually a very easy part to R & R with a good used.

Edit- above info applies to 8V- did not notice OP has a 944S (944s)

GL & welcome.

See if this housing is secure and square. http://rennbay.com/Cam-Gear-Cover-Se...944S2-968.html

^ whoa, at that price it would be cheaper to get a MegaJolt and convert to EDIS ignition.

I would suspect the Volvo parts but the housing needs to sit square...magnesium gets all puffy and spotty when the secondary voltage runs though it.

Thanks everyone, I believe it is just a defective cap because even with the old cap it never made that banging sound. Returning the cap today hopefully the new one fixes it, this is my daily driver so tearing the cam open is something I would like to avoid.

Just see if the centering hub on the housing is concentric and the cap sits flush.

Dropping a Benjamin on a cap and button is ludicrous until you buy odometer gears)) the cap on my car was original and lasted 24 years so a pretty solid part...it lives again on something Swedish))

There are TWO screws that holds the rotor on. Make BOTH of them are snug and tight. Or else the rotor will flop around and bang itself on the cap.
