Default Ready to deal on the 86 today

My paperwork is in process with geico, two and a half weeks have passed. it is time for a new car.

I played phone tag with the guy that has the 86 with 48k. he never called my shop to confirm prices on belts and things.

I am going to offer him low fours and see what happens. it needs belts and motor mounts, doesnt have a rear sway bar, and needs 500 in bodywork to fix the dings on the hood and door handle.

i figure the car is worth say 7300 if perfect, less about 500 for the bodywork, 700 for the belts and water pump, 100 for new coolant hoses and 300 for motor mounts. thats stuff that has to be done now.

That brings it down to 5700. I know the clutch will start chunking soon because of the age, so off comes another say 1300.

Thats $4,400. The tires and brakes are new.

If he doesnt take my offer, I look at the Z28 for nine grand. If that falls through, I look at the S2 in Houston on ebay.

So whadda ya think? Am I being fair to both sides?

Hey Tom, if you need them I have the front and rear stock swaybars from my 85.5 944. You can have them for the price of shipping.

Don't know that the guy will take $4,400 for the car. But, the fact that it does need significant work, does bring the value down quite a bit. Sounds like you might get a great deal though. Good luck!

Make him tell you what he wants first. Also make sure you get a PPI, it sounds like he's not exactly a stickler for maintenance. How long has it been for sale for?

If you buy it for $4,400 and put $2,500 into it, you have a excellent low mileage 944 (turbo right?). I still think it's a great deal.

Turbo, wrong. it is an NA with no sway bars.

The options are leather, sunroof and a sport steering wheel. Also european delivery.

Im not sure it has cruise control! I took it for granted it had it. but the brains are usually bad even if it has it.

Ugh, sorry. You could get a decent turbo for that price. I say look further into that S2 and stay away from the F-body. The couple I have driven aren't as nice/fun as either of my 944's.

Oh no. Please no. Not a Z28. If for no other reason than to make a statement. Find a nice 300ZX, VR-4, MR2 Turbo, Corrado, GTI, Prelude VTec, Celica All-Trak, Miata M, or something.

Im begging you. In the name of humanity. If you sell your soul, I ask you, what do you have left.

Default THe guys dreaming

I would point these things out to him.

I would put the price tag on everything he need to have done to the car and disclose if he is now aware of them via and inspection if not get an inspection on all the below item. 5000 would be a deal for this guy 4400 for an N/A with this mileage would be high still as much as I hate to say this buy 3000 is right on the mark.

Clutch $14-1600.00
Belts $1200.00
Front and rear engine seals and installation another $600.00
Body work $700.00

Check the AC to see if it is leaking and tack on an extra $600.00 for repair here almost guaranteed work will be needed, also check for leaks on the PS rack and pump are then you can add on another $450 not including labor.

3200.00 is what Kelly Blue Book puts the NA at in this condition and mileage. The guy is dreaming!!! Go to Kelly blue book .com and run the numbers your self as much as he would like this car to be worth that much he is dreaming I know I would like mine to be worth that much even after putting a ridiculous amount of money into it. You’re offering him more than a dealer ever would by a long shot and the car needs work.

Educate the seller.

Edmunds is what new car dealers use to sell off there lot to customers. It is not what they use to buy a car from you. They use the Kelly blue book value. Private sellers have an emotional bond to the vehicle that needs to be over come I know I am going through the same thing with a seller right now and he has already stated that he wants something closer to what Edmunds is claming. The difference is if I bought a car at the Edmunds price I would want some kind of guarantee that the work that needed to be done was already done and taken care of. That wont happen in a private sale so the Kelly blue book is the traditional method and generally accepted method of car pricing all through out the US in the private market.

Good luck man
TaboII
