Has anyone ever done a "low profile" headlight like they have for the first gen Miata like in this picture.
The Miata also used a 7" round headlight, but there are kits to replace that with a 2 smaller lights and I was thinking you could find a projector version to put into the 944.

I've always wanted to do that to my car. Maybe I could do something like that during the winter. I guess making the buckets would be straight forward enough (as said above: Fiberglass, or would that handle the heat?). But how would you modify the linkage to make it only go up 3" instead of 7"?

Besides the mounting area for the lights you will also have to change the linkage geometry to reduce the height they "POP" up.
Not as easy as you think because the stop is welded into the head light bucket in such a way that the whole bucket would have to be re-engineered, cut up and reassembled.

One other question concerning the headlight motor stop. Does the motor stop due to a switch (eg the sunroof ) or does it reach a stall due to the limiter welded on the linkage?
BTW Ryan, yup, got to 2 AX's this year before I became a Dad. Since you're back in town, we should try to meet up, really!
Cheers,

The headlight motor gear box has three semi circular contacts. This stops the motor at two locations in one rotation. Uses these contacts, the relay and light switch. Same logic as the wiper and rear hatch release motors.
These contacts and the relay DO NOT have headlight current going through them.
