Rally 924??
As sone of you kow, I now have a 924 that I am going to rebuild. I was thinking of making it a rally car. Not some low to the ground street car, but a dirt road rally one. Do you guys have any pics that I can go by or advice on how to make it a somewhat rally, if thats possible. I do know I will have racing seats, 6pnt belts, rollcage, but what about the suspension? tires? and more? thanks guys for you help

There were a few 924 rally cars in their day. To do one now, you will want to raise the suspension 1-2 inches and upgrade the alternator for all of the extra lighting and computer accessories. Add a metal under-engine skid pan and the required safety equipment (seats, rollcage, belts, etc) and you are good to go.
Here's a shot of one:

curious...how would I raise the suspension? im not familiar with porsche suspension. I currently drive a toyota 4runner. Is there just a higher output alternator for the porsche, or would I have to re-wire and make a bracket for one?

for tires, you will need ralley tires. you know the kind with the lil metal stubs for better traction

Not quite sur how to raise the suspension on a 924/944 for rallying. I'll take a stab and guess that for the front you would want longer springs or some sort of spring spacer. For the rear, I would think that re-indexing the t-bars or getting some coil-overs (soft ones) with long springs would work.
Oh, you may want to consider adding a skid pan for underneath the transaxle as well.

I am pretty sure the factory rally efforts with the 924 were in GTS and GTR variants. Based on that I would assume your going to want to consider coil overs all around since that is what was used on those cars. Maybe contact Morris Dampers or TrueChoice to talk to them about getting shocks built for that specific application. I'd also consider seam welding up the body for strength, at least around the suspension.
Even though there is certainly a precedent to build a 924 rally car (I still want to) I'm not sure how easy it will be to find much out about what it takes for that specific car. I'm also not sure how competitive it will be if you actually decide to rally the thing, but it should be fun none the less.
Check out this sight. It has links to other rally sites and a good classified section.

Actually the factory raced 924 NA's and regular turbos for rally, not gts or gtr's . Infact at one point they had a turbo ready to race but not enough turbos had been made in production for homoglation, so they had to put in a NA motor and still did well.

Actually I have pictures of factory built GTS and GTR rally cars and a few articles at that. I'll post them tonight if (1) I can find them quickly and (2) you would like to see them.

It doesnt look like they raised that car much, but instead it looks like they just raised the fender wells. You need to increase the travel on the suspension for a car like that.
