Default Got a 928 but had to rescue my 944

New to the 944 forum as I have a 928 but couldn't resist rescuing this 944 in the UK as it is so solid. It's been sitting outside for six years but polished up a treat. Just changing the belt and putting a battery on it to see if it goes, then decide what to do with it. Have to say it's way easier to work on than my 928 and the parts are much easier to get hold of. I love the delicacy of the switchgear and the short sporty dash compared with the 928. Will hopefully post more images as the project unfolds

Are you located in the US? Just asking because of the RHD.

Cool! Looking forward to the progress. As a 928 owner as well a belt change on a 944 is a piece of cake in comparison.

Hi all, sometime since my last post but I have been busy "fixing" things... or rather doing work without gain so far....To date I have completed:-
- TB & balance belts
- Fuel strainer check (clear) and fuel change
- DME relay repaired and jumper made up for testing
- Replacement ECU fitted as previous one water damaged
- Oil pressure recovered by applying compressed air to dipstick
- New battery fitted
- Fuel pump jumped direct and found to flow when jumped on DME
- Speed and reference sensors checked for resistance - ok, not checked for pulse yet but I have seen tacho bounce
- Made up a noid light and checked all injectors clicking
- Checked spark getting to plugs
Still can't get any sign of starting despite work, plus tacho bounce seems to have disappeared but can't find any loose connections. Frustratingly the speed and ref sensors are stuck fast despite twisting, wd40 spray and hot water. I guess the next step is to put an oscilloscope on them to see if they are pulsing and worry about removal/clean/height setting only if there is something wrong with the signal. In the meantime I have ordered fuel pressure test gauge and Noid light to confirm fuel supply side but is there something else I am missing?

David

Oh and I cleaned it!

Nice work.

The engine needs three things: fuel, spark, and compression.

Spark...check. Fuel...flowed to where? The rail? Not good enough...need to confirm fuel spray at the injectors. Compression...have you tested that? A leak down wouldn't/couldn't hurt, either.

I bought an 84 944 in nearly the exact same shape. It had also been sitting for 6-7 years. When I got to the point you're at, it wouldn't start because the injectors were stuck (closed). I pulled off each connector at the injectors and pulsed them with 12v until I heard consistent clicking. Never a problem after that.

Yep I guess next step when I can unwind reference sensor self inflicted breakage is to check the injectors are actually delivering. Will keep you posted. Wow she's a needy girl and not in a good way!!
