I'd go with the Z28. You already spent a fortune on your s2 and based on my family's experience with GM cars, you won't have to spend thousands on maitenance or repairs with the z28.

if the seller ever calls me back I will look at the chevy tomorrow. there is a 968 a few miles from me with 49k. the car is perfect, missing only the factory rims which are in my garage with the snows. the seller wants 21k. there is an 89 turbo with 37k abut 45 miles from me. they want 175.

originally i was going to sell the porsche and buy a 3 series convertible. i scanned the classifieds, and decided not to pursue any of the above options, or the S2 timebomb listed in the local paper with 107k and most of the necessary maintenance with an asking price of 10.7.

i could sign a lease on a new Z, looked at one last week, buy a new boxster, etc. i decided i dont want to spend money on a car.

i would buy a used cavalier but dont like the armrest, or lack thereof.

we rented a mustang convertible 6 cyl two years ago. we had a hyundai the first week, then traded it for the mustang. the hyundai was a much nicer car. scary, the hyundai was nicer than the mustang.

Our aurora seems to be put together pretty well. the only rattle is something i could fix in a few minutes, but am having too much fun pissing off the service manager.

i havent driven a fourth generation camaro/firebird but had a few first generation (still have the first car i ever bought), had two second generations, and had a lot of seat time in the 80's in my friends 82 that I ordered for him with the WS6 (his was one of the first so it had rear drums).

I have to drive this car, but I think it will be better than an NA and definitely not as good as a 968, but it is less than half the price of a 968, and i dont think less than half the car, even on the track.

A 968 will be stolen just as quickly as your S2. Same goes for a Turbo. The Camaro is a different kinda target.

If you like the way it handles and feels, get it! It wont cost you much in maint, it's impressively fast from 0-60, in sweet shape, has the mods you like, and low miles. Everyone (including me) is gonna say buy another S2 or Porsche something or other. You are the one driving the car, and if you dig a newer Camaro, go for it! It's NOT a Porsche. The doors are heavy, and make a "thud" when closed, thanks to the GM plastic and foam interiors. But it will throw you back in the seat when floored...and it will have a muscle car personality, to some extents. You have THE original muscle car...it would be interesting having a newer version.

Check the car out. Maybe it would be silly to get another 944, knowing all the trouble and costs you had with your old one.

That said, HERE is a fun station car:

Andy,

i said this in 86, and i will say it again. i am not a proctologist, therefore I cannot own a vehicle called probe.

dont forget a clutch on a 944 is 1400, alternator $200, water pump 250, belts 750, shocks $900.

thats $3500 for nothing out of the ordinary. there are three low mileage 83&84 NAs in connecticut right now. price ranges from 5800 to 7500. i spoke to the owner of an 84 with 64k owned sinc 85 with 20k.

original clutch, maybe replace shocks, doesnt know it it has sways & konis, belts done a few years ago. she wants 7500.

if i get if for say 4500, how long till the rubber clutch goes now 6000, belts make it 6750, and i have a twenty year old car with no airbags or abs, and twice the mileage of a 10 year old car.

the mods are the same thing most guys on this board do. sways, shocks, ignition, chip & air.

the chrome wheels look very saturday night fever to me, but thats from the pics. fortunately the original wheel come with it. they are good quality (SLP) wheels. one of the better tuner brands.

i dont want to deal with ******* mechanics like you just did. and i dont know for sure that the shop that rebuilt my motor didnt have a hand in my car disappearing.

there is no value for stolen 944s, if it was a joy ride it should have turned up by now. it doesnt make sense. swap the vin from another car onto mine. what about the decals on every panel with the vin. it just doesnt make sense.

Tom,

When my 87 951 was stolen it was for a joyride, the car turned up 2 weeks later, motor blown, seats slashed and some body damage. Totaled.

The only things missing where the fog lamps and stereo, how sad is that?
Cops told me that Porsches are not often stolen.

Good luck with whatever you decide to get.

check out some taurus SHO's - you can grab one of the Gen2's for $3000 or so, change the oil regularly, and it probably won't explode until it hits 200K miles.

that's my other project car, and nothing's quite so much fun as waxing a 944 in a TAURUS!! hehe. oh and it's not much slower than a Z28...

Forget a 4-door Tom! And you are right--"Probe"? What was Ford thinking? They should have called it the Ford PB-5, or the FX, or something. Dumb name.

I understand your train of thought. I would NOT buy an 84 944, no matter how cheap. Like you said, clutch, shocks, mounts cost the same for an 84--and you would be taking a step backwards.

That Camaro isn't that bad, and maint would be minor at worst. When are you gonna get to drive it and check it out?

Minimum curb weight 2800lbs
Manual Transmission
Hatch
Two doors
Autocrossable
Lower maintenance than an S2
Under 50,000 miles
Back seat
Under $10,000
you're talking about a DSM. 1st or 2nd gen Eclipse/talon is all that and awd, you can get as much power as you want for fairly cheap, and it'll run a good autocross with a bit of suspension work.

Andy,
Just because I love you, I am going to look at an 86 944 with 47k. All original down to the belts me thinks.

asking 6900. as soon as i run a carfax i am off to whitestone queens (35 min) to look at it.

i say no more than 5k. closer to 4500, i am going armed with receipts from my car.

keep ya posted.

Sounds like a good basic NA with low miles, sweetie! No S2 worries, easy replacement parts, etc. Expect a full report when you see it!

its under a separate post. all the nasty details.

the guy with the z28 pissed me off by not calling me back to set up an appointment like we agreed to on friday.

pissed me off so much that i picked up the times from my lawn and read it!

the guy with the na lives 18 miles from me. carfax supported his story.

Tom, I liked the earlier post that said "go slow"... wait and find the right car for you. What about an A4 or a WRX?
