Default Trouble shifting into 1st gear

Hey guys i did a bit of looking around and have not been able to find much on the subject. I am having trouble shifting into 1st from a stop or when the car is rolling. The car has not always done this it has just started doing this. I have to really push the stick or give it a good wiggle before it will engage. The rest of the gears can be moved into extremely easily however 1st is just plain difficult.

It isn't grinding or making noise when i try to push it into first but it is still worrying me as it seems to be getting worse. Any ideas if it is just the linkage or if it might be the actual gears that are causing it.

Try going to second every time before first (shift from 2nd to 1st). That's a Carrera trick- curious if it helps. It could make the car a lot more drivable while you hunt for the real root cause.

synchro is probably pretty worn out.
i cant go into 1st at all while car is still moving, even double clutching.

Syncro worn or broken, most likely. Wouldn't hurt to check the shift lever clevis pin and base bushing in the cabin, though.

.....and do the 'depress clutch and wait five seconds to engage reverse' test. This should tell you if your master and slave are holding pressure.

The sum of the wear in the shifter mechanisms can add up..inspect everything.

A different box but the last side shifter 914 I had required you to engage first as you rolled to a stop...linkage was perfect but the internals where simply worn out.

In response to Gtroth's statement, ..sometimes just back pressure on the shifter ..like you were trying to go into second..will help align the synchros so you can go into first will help..no need to go all the way into second.

I agree with V2 to hit second before &... DO YOU REV MATCH?

The best thing you can do for down shifting... is blipping the throttle first & acquiring the lower gear while rpms are high. It'll help your syncros.

Panafonic,

You bought a 192 K car and the PO said "the clutch was OK"

https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...l#post12119703

Does the car still have the OEM rubber clutch disc? If so the clutch is bad.

My guess is the shift linkage on the transmission has come loose and needs to be tightened down.
