Default Thoughts on 15 year old tires

My 86 951 gets very little use and spent most of its life inside a garage. I just looked at the tires and realized they are 15 years old. Michelin rubber is still soft and there are no cracks. Can I continue to use them or should they be replaced. Hate to spend all that money for a car that get less than 1K miles a year.

The general rule of thumb is 5 years .....

If it were me -- I'd replace them -- then drive the car more!

it really depends on how scared you are of a flat tire - the 944 won't flip upside down like the ford SUVs that got all this scary thing going for everyone - if you are going to go flat out, I'd change them, but to drive around near the speed limit, I personally wouldn't bother.

Not only are these old tires dangerous, but at best they are obsolete technology. Put on some modern rubber, like MPSS's, and enjoy the performance that is still inherent in this platform. I had an '86 951 and drove the hell out of it up until 2002.

Rarely used. No heat cycles. No UV exposure. Limited speed. Limited range.

depending on when and how it fails it could cost you more than a new set of tires.

I keep mine for the sake of completeness.
