Do you suspect your car is relatively original? Post up a photo of the options sticker, behind the trunk carpet, on the wall near the lock cylinder mechanism.

Alternatively, jack up the rear of the car, transmission in neutral and hand brake off. Spin one wheel forward. Does the opposite wheel also move forward? Yes...LSD. No...open diff.

HK / UK ( same thing ) I thought it was , nice / different colour combination , thats why I suspected it was HK/UK import , Australian Delivered ones were far more conservative in colour combo's

As for LSD , most standard 944S2's did not come with a LSD

Like I said , the all of a Sudden gear change quality sounds very much like a broken clutch "rubber centre" & yes they still drive for a little while badly( with **** gear change behavior) until the "spaced" back up lock tabs just break off & the car will no longer go forward or back under its own power

WOW! That's great guys, you've been a massive help. I'll try that wheel rotation thing and figure it out. ALso, I believe the car to be relatively original. I have see the original sticker in the boot & I've also gone to Porshce Centre Southport and they kindly printed a copy of the car's history from their records for the trim & colour codes and country of 1st delivery as well as dealer of delivery, model year, when commissioned and stuff like that. Engine Type: M44/41, Gearbox Type: G083F. Can anyone inform me what this all means?

M44/41 = 3.0L, DOHC, 10.9 CR...in other words, standard S2 motor.
G083F = 5-sp S2 gearbox with 3.875 FD.

Did the dealer options print-out include the code, 220? If so, your car was originally built/delivered with an LSD.

Nope, no 220 in the list anywhere. So I guess no LSD. I'm going to try out the transmission fluid suggestion and keep you guys posted. Thanks once again.

+1

Happened to me. Feels and sounds like a broken gearbox, due to the noise transmitting down the torque tube. Check the clutch inspection window for rubber fragments.

No matter. Before you purchase the gear oil, put the rear in the air and spin one of the wheels to make sure...an enthusiast could've installed an LSD for not an exorbitant amount of money.

In any case, let us know how things turn out.

At the risk of sounding like a total ****, but where do i check the "clutch inspection window" for rubber fragments if its a deteriorating part?

under the car the clutch assembly is within the bell housing on the back of the motor. There is a round inspection window about an inch and a half wide. It may (if you are lucky) have a black plastic cap covering it. Take out the cap and take a look inside with a good light. See if you can detect any rubber chunks or anything else loose or broken.

+1 on the clutch. My S2 acted very similar. Once I replace the clutch the problem went away.
