Wink R-12 A/C - Blowing VERY cold again!!

Well, I finally bought some R-12 off of E-bay. I only used one 12 oz. can to top off my system and man does it blow cold now!! I was able to buy 3 - 12 oz cans for $55 (including delivery). Not a bad price at all. I was really surprised that my system didn't need more refrigerant than it took. I didn't even put the entire can in. I stopped filling it about 3/4 of the can into it. I was watching the thermometer in my vent and it dropped to 55-58 degrees F so I figured I had enough. Plus I could barely see any bubbles anymore in the sight glass.

One of the best repairs I ever made.

55 to 58, thats nothing. after I replaced my Compressor, dryer, and condencer, and filled it with virgin r-12. I read my max cold temp at 38 degrees Fahrenheit. You should have seen the look on my face when I saw my breath on a 98 degree day!

Max, you interested in selling the rest of what you have left over? My original '88 charge died in the spring. I need to figure out if it was leaking but that is a job for this winter. Hot Summer In The City is over here and we are on the wind down to winter so no rush. Just let me know.

Max, so what did you do with the rest of the can that you opened? When I went through this process this summer, I didn't know what to do with the leftover freon -- so I ended up just dumping it into the system. I used two can (starting from completely leaked out) - the first got me to mid-50's, the second got me down to exactly 40.

BTW, there's a place on the web somewhere where you can get EPA certified in one hour start to finish (depending on how quickly you can read twenty pages and take an open-book multiple choice test). It's bit of a joke really...

Dan, Sorry for the late reply. I don't check the boards as often as I used to. I plan to keep the R-12 I have left over because I will probably need it in the future. Plus, I think I need to put a little more in my system to tell you the truth. As for being EPA certified...I AM. I paid the $15 and took the easy test and got my card. However, the truth is that most of the guys selling on Ebay will sell the R-12 to you with or without the certification. In their ads they have to say that they won't sell it to you without certification for legal reasons via Ebay and the EPA.

Most of the can went into my system but that which was left over did leak out of the can via the hose connections. OOPS!

For those of you that want R-12 it is actully pretty cheap on Ebay. Dan I would stongly recommend that method of purchase. You will see cans on there for $15-$17 everyday.

Best Regards,
Max

I had the same experience with the last bit of stuff left over in the can -- I think some leakages are inevitable if you do it yourself. There goes the ozone layer....

In case anyone is looking for the easy test, there is one at www.imaca.org
