Default Rolled Fenders on an '88 951S

Do only the 951S's have rolled fenders, or do regular 951's have them too?

Thanks

Only 951S's and 89 951's but you can roll the fenders with a baseball bat, or so I heard as far as I know.

I *think* that 951S cars had them rolled in 1988. For 1989 onward, all 951's and 944s2' s had them rolled. Some Rennlister posted a link for this info last year but I couldn't find it......

Speaking of rolled, a buddy of mine rolled his FENDERS (not just the lip on the inside) so that he could fit 315's under them. It looks unbelieveably cool AND factory, and he managed to do it without any filler (don't try this at home, he's a pro body man). It basically starts at the top of the flare at the stock width and gradually tapers out. He said it didn't have to go out as far as you'd think and like I said, it looks stock at first glance.

Its one of the coolest body mods I have seen on our cars. I will try to get a picture or two of it and post it.

Regards,

I took a hammer to mine to make room for my larger wheels..............

Surprisingly worked out pretty well..........

BUT its not for the faint at heart.

My 1990 S2 Cab does not have rolled rear fenders (my 951S does.) However my cab does have 9" rear D90's. I thought the reason for the rolled fenders was the 9" rear wheels and 245's. Maybe my rear wheels are not stock, but if they are not it's the only non-stock thing that was on that car when I bought it.

To the best of my knowledge this was done strictly by an agreement at the dealers body shop.It was not a purchased option. Later on this concept was picked up in racing circles and started to be performed at large by body shops. Rolling the qrt lip is 1 thing ,the front fender lip quite a different story.

whereas the common 944 NA / 951 fender lip is bent to a "L" profile, the "rolled lip" fenders are bent into a tight radius "U" shape to create more space for wider tires - which could otherwise rub the normal "L" shape.

The front fenders on my '86 are rolled and I will have to do the rear ones as I'm getting rubbing over bumps and during corners...

Anyone have a tutorial on this?

I may open up this highly debated topic again, but instead of taking the chance of mucking up your rear fenders (bulging them out and/or cracking paint), I would suggest grinding the inside lip down 1/4" to 3/8" with a grinder and then touching up the exposed area with zinch chromate primer and then the body-color paint. That's what I did, so did Danno and a bunch of others.

If you do decide to roll the fender lip anyway, there is a specific tool for it that bolts to the wheel studs. I don't have the link for it, maybe someone else will post it for you.

I have one of the fender rollers - you can see a pic of something similar here: http://www.robsaudiworld.com/fender.htm

That and a heat gun are the only right way to roll fenders - I rented mine out to a bunch of local VW guys on VWVortex, they were happy with the results and said it was easy.

ahh... google search rolling fenders and you get: http://www.bmwdiy.info/fender-rolling/ pictures, tutorials, etc.

I've also seen a web site featuring the baseball bat method! So search on google.
