Who's gonna lie? NOT ME... I had such a blast today. I'm not a great driver by any stretch, but I think these drives that Wilson takes me on improves the skill set.
Specifically, these longs straights allow me to get used to the upper speed limits of my car. Which lets me get used to the braking distances at those speeds.
Also I learn to trust the car and myself in the corners... and also JUST GET MORE SEAT TIME in the car.
Which helps shifting (up & down, in combination with braking or without) smoothly as to not jar the suspension, brake traction, harm the clutch or the transaxle. Really paying attention to shifting smoothly is a good thing. Now I just need to learn better lines.

So I pulled Wilson over. Turned ignition off & did very minor tuning. Just like a 944 with carpet, the ecm (DME) is under the passenger's feet. 2 tools are need (large philips screwdriver and the triangular FQS tool). I adjusted it to click 3. Because at 4500 rpm in 5th gear I noticed my air/fuel ratio (AFR) is 14.2:1 which is much leaner than I want. I would like 12.5 or 13. Heck I'd even settle for 13.5 but 14.2?

After a minute of testing I realized the setting must be wrong. The AFR controller reads way too lean. This sucks. Enough is enough. I break my FQS tool so it's shortened, I can access the DME adjustment from the driver's seat. No more removing the DME. And that's just how it's gotta be.
The FQS adjustments are so minute & it feels as though the spacing is different as you get closer to click 7. Kind of difficult to tell if you have it on the right "click". Having the AFR gauge really helps verify the click position.
Those loose connectors on the upper left... one of them is for factory engine diagnostics BTW. One day I'll try and figure that out.

So, finally Wilson is content with the AFR. I think I know the problem & I think it's electrical. I also think it's related to him running super rich at start up. More details on a possible fix in the future....
But today is Sunday. It's gloriously clear & wonderful out. Combined with the 944's excellent heater system & miles of uncluttered beautiful road ahead. Lets go for a rip shall we?
Funny, ever since the cat delete, the exhaust sounded obnoxious. Then whenever I've gutted the interior, it becomes too loud. The joy of driving as a touring car or even DD is drastically reduced.
Not anymore. The headers necked down to the Dansk is worth the $2000 canadian I spent on it. That's not pocket change. But now I hardly ever put ear plugs in!

Going towards B.C. is a logging road. Lots of warning signs about logging trucks. Not really a road for a sports car. Cool lets check it out!
As a side note: I've always loved the profile & slope of the '44's hood. Don't you?

2nd gear & 3rd. 2500-4500 rpms. Easy to break traction when you step on it. Visibility is ok. But the road is really quite narrow so I'm good for now... just hope I don't run into a logging truck. Someone's gonna die (me). Fresh tracks in the mud. Got a strange look from a fellow in an F-150 pickup.

Having fun but proceeding with caution & realize that the road is getting too soft and getting too narrow. Plus the edges of the road are dropping off sharply. In a nutshell: I'm screwed if I meet up with a big truck. This is bear country. I'm a dead man if I get pushed off the road. Time to turn around.
