I've looked into the las swap and the audi 2.2 swap quite a bit, the cost depends mostly on the level of fabrication you are up for. I can PM you the build sheet I have for swapping my NA. Prices are based on my local suppliers so you may have to look around and make corrections for your area

i used to go to junkyards every week or 2 for about 4 years. i still go every few weeks.
i can count on one hand how many of the old audi I-5s i've ever seen.
if you want 5 cyls go with the current VW 2.5 or even a Volvo 5 cyl, infinitely easier to find, better tuning and very very strong engines still.

I have found a few on car-part. I agree though they aren't so easy to find, however they cooperate nicely with the 931 bell housings (which also can be found in any gumball machine lol)

You could probably adapt a hydraulic TOB to the standard 924 bellhousing or just live with the cable setup
Or blow $$ on the Quicktime steel VW/Audi BH.
One other thing...the Audi I-5 is some seriously ancient iron.
I think they used one on the Titanic.

WOW!! maybe I should have done something similar for my first engine.
$1,600 vs $16,000 sounds pretty good about now.
classic beemers, V12s? Geebus, your rides are gonna be sick.
here's the music equivalent of a V12: www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fWyzwo1xg0

Why does no one ever do any 6-cylinder swaps? V6, VR6, Inline 6? Do they just not fit, the inline configuration especially? I mean sure they might be making a hell of a lot less than any V8, but they still make quite a lot more than our N/A engines will stock(save for a S2 or 968).
edit: doesn't Audi have a V6?

BMW I-6 are very long and don't fit. One or two people have tried Toyota JZ and even a Nissan RB engine but good luck finding those cheap.
VR6 a few have started but we've never seen one finished.
V6 a few have been done but its the same work as putting in a V8 so why wouldn't you?
There are Buick 3.8s that run in a few 944s, you could put in a Vortec 4.3 using the SBC swap kit if you wanted. But then you'd be using a 450lb engine that makes 200hp or you can add 2 more cylinders/100 lbs and start at 300.
I am considering a small V6 (different family/mfr entirely) into a 944 at some point, but its more a pipedream than project right now.

I-6 are really long, there have been one or two done from Volvos into 924s because they bolt up to the bellhousing but those engines are hard to find.

Swaps with the transaxle are way more a PITA than regular setups.

So just me 0.02 after looking around a while:
With an adapter plate, a late 60's Plymouth clutch, Camaro flywheel and pressure plate and of course some DIY engine mounts the whole deal is mounted. Truck harness and ECU, some cooling hoses and throwout bearing spacer and it runs
As far as the Engine:
the I'm-broke-but-wanna-go-fast LS recipe I've cooked up:
- L33 from 05 or so, from vin code B, chevy 1500. It has Z06 heads, is fully aluminum and can be found on car-part for under a grand in most places
- pistons from a 4.8, this bumps compression to around 10:1, (alot of speed shops sell used ones for nothing)
- car intake to clear the hood(or a sawzall)
- a cam of your choosing and some springs to match
- turbo fuel pump and radiator
- hooker 2312 headers and a hammer
based on the info at LS1 forums this should put 400hp within easy reach. The whole cost if you hunt the bargains or have some connections can be under 4 grand.
cheers

The 5.3L Vortec is the way to go now for a cheap aluminum block power plant. Same architecture as the LS1; heads and cams are all interchangeable. Fairly easy to find also.
The LS1 is getting harder to find and as a result are getting pretty expensive. The last one used in a production car was in '04, so your talking a 10 year old engine now. All of the LS1's ive seen are within $1-2k of a brand new crate LS3... by the time you refresh the used LS1, add a cam and other mods to bump up power your paying around the same amount as a brand new LS3.
