Unhappy Freaky Corrosion Thing - WTF!

So, clearly it is still summer and all of the winter salt from last year should be washed away, right? Well, I took my car to this place in Copley, OH a few weeks ago to get an alignment and have my belt tensions checked. I get the thing back and look under the hood to make sure they put everything back together and all looks well, though a bit dusty. The dust, I am guessing, is due to the fact that I had to park on their back lot when I dropped the car off, and the lot is dirt/gravel.

Well, I looked under the hood this week and all of that dust has turned to dull corrosion. All of the galanized parts, any polished aluminum, all fasteners are all crusty with oxidation/corrosion (well, not right now, since I wiped it off and spray it with BoeShield T9). What the hell was that dust? What did they gravel their lot with, rock salt?

Wow, wouldn't that suck!

It doesn't look like anything in my car caught fire. It also doesn't look thick enough anywhere under the hood to indicate that they used an extinguisher on my car. More like an even coating of fine dust like it settled on the car and in the engine compartment. Could be they used an extinguisher in the shop area and it drifted onto/into my car. If it was that, I wonder what caught fire?

There's a thought. I think there is some kind of industrial stuff near them. I'll drive by tomorrow and see what I can see. That would suck because they actually work on some nice cars. I wonder if this has been happening for a while and if anyone else has noticed.
