How old is the battery.. It can have one bad cell it can do this very thing.. If you put a volt meter accross the battery terminals with the car off you should get a reading of like 12.5 volts. start the car and check again it should be a minimum of like 13+ volts that would get you by. optimum is like 14+ volts. If you start it and you still read 12 volts your charging system is not working.

Some battery shops will test it free.

if you have a pep boys around you, they will test it for free. as a bonus, part of the testing process is charging the battery. if your battery is good, you leave with a completely charged battery. if bad, you'll know for sure

I don't think it is the battery.....I shut the car down 2 weeks ago with the battery drained and yesterday after installing new waterpump and alternator I hit the key and it fired right up like a new battery.....I don't beleive it would have come up on its own if it had a dead cell....possible, though I guess.....I am very busy at work this week and weekend so I won't be able to look at it until next week......I am losing summertime driving....arrrrrrrrrg!!

Is something like your stereo shorting? That happened to me in my Celica, and it sucked the battery dry in a few days! Stereo died while driving, and then nothing; but when I turned it off, wierd buzzing came over the speakers.

Just an idea, but look for shorts!

My first car, and the first time my mom caught me being bad. I had a 75 new yorker 2 door and a 440 engine. the lights slowly dimmed and the car died. 10 miles from home. 3am.. walked home. woke up at noon mom said, I thought you were gone all night. I said no. my car died. and would not start. she took me to it and of course it started right up got the look and drove home... Ended up being a bad alternator. battery recoverd enough to get me home but would not start later...

Have a test light? Check it for a draw. Easy to do.
