Default Found an engine!

Woohoo! A scrap guy has an engine from a wrecked car. it's an 86 Turbo engine, 100k Km, he wants 8000SEK (About $900)

I'm gonna go down there tonight and take a look, then decide if I'm gonna swap it, or get someone to do it!

Any advice on what to look for? How different is an 86 engine to an 89?

The block on your car is a 952 stamped block, the '86 will be stamped 951. There are a couple of minor differences in the casting, biggest difference in the block is that the '86 will not have the autotensioner for the timing belt. You can have the '86 block machined to accept it tho, as the boss for it was cast into it. You just need to drill the hole for the bolt.

The big difference is the head, as you have larger exhaust ports on the '89, I believe. Can anyone one else confirm that its only the exhaust? You will want to use your head from your '89 on the '86 block, and you will be happy.

Regards,

That was the plan! I'm going to keep as much as possible from my engine that unbolts easily

Mike, I think there is also a difference in the oil pressure relief valve on the 86, check that out too, plus the 86 has the forged rods. Price doesn't sound to bad either.

Yup... you'll need to keep the oil pressure relief valve and housing on the '86 block, you cannot swap the later parts over. Been there, done that.

I also adapted the late tensioner to the early block, not too hard, just take measurements from your old block and drill/tap very carefully.

Seems a bit daft? Are the hole patterns different then or is it the valve hole in the block?

The crankshaft on the S is different from all the other 944s since it has a different part number. I am not sure what is different but you may want to find out.

The brass bushing in the block is smaller for the '86 3 piece valve. Unless you want to pull that bushing out, bore the hole, and install the new one, I'd stick with the 3 peice, or get the 1 peice retro valve. Either way, you'll need to keep the '86 stuff.

I have not had any problems with mine.

So then, Different crank, different tensioner, different relief valve, smaller exhaust valve, and forged rods.

That's not too bad!

How come the early cars had less power then? It can't all be in the valves? Must be some management thing also????

Thanks guys!

I think they all use the same valves. I also believe the bigger turbo had something to do with more power on the later one Also the chip is probably programmed differently then the early ones.

Luis, Don't ever go away again! Look what happens when you do.........

I guess the motor didn't want to get to 300k Km. Bunch of scores down #1 cylinder mean the block's a write off, or I spend €€€€€€€ on a 3ltr turbo at Sanden's place.

Never mind!

Oh, and my Dad's suggestion......... "sell the bloody thing". I think I'll ignore that peice of Fatherly wisdom......... what does he know anyway (Renault drivers....... )

Is there any guarantee on the condition of the motor?

The guy said that if the engine turns out to be a dud, then just return it.......... Cool!
