Hi All
I just came back from the Whistler run last weekend and saw all the dream machines and got inspired. I have an '84 na Bronzite Taupe. The interior in brown and actually in real nice shape. Here is the problem, the carpet are sad. Full of cigarette burns and need replacing badly. Does anyone know where I can get a set, reasonably priced. E-Bay has nothing.
Thanks for your help.

Hope someone has a suggestion. I have posted about this twice. So far the only thing I have gotten is don't buy the ones from Chicago. Surely someone has put new carpets down. I also would like to know the source.

Try www.worlduph.com I have not bought from them yet, but the prices look good. They sell both an OEM style and "Domestic" style carpet. One is a molded one piece and the other is a overlap multi-piece. The molded domestic for a full-set on an early 944 shows $396 (small spare). This is the entire carpet set. They sell just a trunk set as well.
I e-mailed them and they sent me out some samples and a price list. It sounds reasonbible for a full-set, but again I have no clue what the quality is like other than the samples they sent are really dense. I'll probably look at replacing mine next spring.
Any other suggestions?

World Upholstery is the place. Also check with local auto upholstery shops, they can order good quality stuff that is easier to work with than the 295.00 junk from PartWerks.
I am the guy that just finished doing one with the junk from PW in Chicago, don't be tempted by their price!!!!!!!!!

Is it just cheap carpet (can see the batting) or just poorly made? This stuff I can fold the sample and still see nothing but carpet. Was it a molded set from PartsWerks?

Yes it was a molded set from Part Werks that I got off of ebay for 295.00
A couple of problems that you don't see from the sample that they send you:
1. It is a ONE PIECE molded set. The original stuff in these cars is a TWO PIECE set that seams up by your console area going from drivers side to pass side. The one large single piece of carpet is WAY too hard to deal with, and it makes for more lumps and bumps in the finished job.
2. This stuff really comes from a company called "Trim Parts" in OK. They drop ship it to you. What they did is pull a set out of a 944 and use that for the pattern. Mine was way off center towards the pass side. To give you an idea. I had 5 inches extra on pass side and 1/2 inch on drivers side. Almost imposible to get it under the door jambs. Also the large rear hatch area piece is off the same way, only not quite as bad. Probably 3 inches extra on pass side and 2 inch short on drivers side. This sounds easy to fix,,,it aint. Because of the way this stuff is molded you can't just pull it over to one side or the other. The spare tire hump is molded as is the transmission tunnel hump, you have to center these on their respective part of the car. Plus on the firewall side (front) there was almost 6 inches too much carpet that had to be trimmed off.
3. The "molded" aspect of this stuff is that they sprayed some glue on the back (not on the sample they send you, though) and set it on some kind of trans hump or spare tire and let it dry.
4. It took 3 professional auto upholstery guys about 2 days to get mine done.
Overall, with new mats, it looks a hell of a lot better (funky old Porsche car smell is gone too!) and I can live with it.
I could have had the upholstery shop order, cut and install a little better stuff and had it fit perfect for what this cost.

I thought the domestic pile looks different (thicker, taller pile), than the OEM stuff in our cars. Is this true?
How do they do the hatch carpet from World Upholstery? Will the new carpet have the foam underside backing like the OEM does? Or are you just supposed to lay it on top of your old hatch carpet?

I know that Pelican Parts offer them ($495)...haven't tried them yet, but I'd thought that I should give it a mention:

The stuff from PW did have a little extra mat (like Jute) on the rear deck piece and some on the front floorboards. I lined the whole car with FatMat (dynamat knockoff) and the shop added jute over that.
I think World Upholstery has both imported and domestic carpets

World Upholstery does have the imported carpet, but it is quite a bit higher priced. I suspect that it is as close to original as you can get. They mention two piece for the main part (overlaps) and seperate pieces for the kick panels.
It sounds like it is worth getting a quote from an upholestry shop to provide materials and labor before blowing $300 on cheap carpet you have to take in to get done any way.
Where does the "funky Porsche" smell come from? I thought it was just my car until I got in someone else's. It's like a cross between stale beer and old people. It kicks a bottle of Fabreeze's butt.
