Default Anyone Ever Tried a Walbro Fuel Pump?

The pump in my car right now is fine, and it's still the original Bosch unit. I don't plan on changing it immediately, but it is a 30 year old pump, and that thought does cross my mind every now and then.

That said, has anyone ever tried a Walbro pump in their 944? I've never heard of them being used in 944s, but I know several people who have used them in other cars (primarily Starions and 300ZXs) and have nothing but good things to say about them. Would it be worth giving it a shot? Or should I just buy another OE Bosch pump? FWIW the Walbro pump runs about $135 but can be found for cheaper.

Forget the Walbro, nobody uses them in 944's because bosch pumps are superior in every way. if you want the last fuel pump you'll ever have to buy, just drop a Bosch 044 pump in. A fuel pump from a mercedes 450 SEL is also a 30% higher flow drop in vs stock, slightly easier installation vs an 044 since you dont have to change fittings. The 044 flows ~45% more than the mercedes pump and nearly double the stock pump.

The Bosch 044 was an option, as was the Bosch HV. Is the 044 worth the increase in price over the HV? Depending on where you look it's between $75-100 more for the 044.

I used an in tank Walbro 255 on a Mazda KL V6 that I built up some years ago. It was a common increased flow pump for forced induction KL engines. But, to Dougs point, if you can get a Bosch that is proven in the 944 application, I'd stick with it.

From your post, it looks like you are NA. If so, any of the above pumps will supply much more capacity than you will ever use.

The main reason I was looking at the Walbro was it's generally less expensive than an OE Bosch pump. Depending on where you buy it, the OE Bosch pump can actually be more expensive than some of the high flow Bosch pumps.

Depends, its worth it to me because I was running out of fuel with a stock pump

if you are making under ~375 rwhp, a stock replacement is probably fine.

Edit: Just realized you are N/A, I'd go with a stock pump or the HV if you can get it cheaper. An 044 is more trouble than its worth on a car that will never need that much fuel.

I have a Walbro Fuel Pump on my NA.
It works just fine!
Just make sure to get the correct fitting if you go this route.
The stock pump only has one fitting. The Walbro has one on each end. The fitting that goes from the pump to the fuel tank hose my be too long and too narrow. Ask about the fittings first, and you'll be fine.

Last pump I bought I got at NAPA, it was in stock and $20 cheaper than on-line. When I opened the box it was a Bosch, #0.580.464.069. Almost 30k miles on it with no issues.

I run a Walbro in my 944LS, been working fine for 3+ years.

Edit: In fact, it's the same pump that I ran in Franky II (924S race car with supercharged 968 engine) for 2 years. So still going strong at 5 years.

I bought the same pump from Vic many years ago, no problems in the 4 years I owned it. The OE Bosch unit was starting to buzz real loud so I went with the less expensive Walbro.

Thanks for the feedback guys! I might just give the less expensive Walbro a try. I know Walbro is a trusted name elsewhere in the automotive world so I don't doubt their quality at all.

I'll be sure to make sure I get the correct fittings if I go with a Walbro.

Shop around, I've seen the Walbro for as little as $100 on the net.
