944 Turbo S as everyday driver vs 968
I need some opionions on buying a 944 Turbo S or a 968 to use as an everyday driver, with approximately 6-8 DE's per year. I've started my search for a 968, and some people are trying to talk me into a 951.
There is a very nice turbo S for sale near me that I am going to look at next week.
Any info/advice appreciated. Thanks.

Yeah, thats a pretty tough call. I think the 968 might have a slight edge as a daily driver with its gobs of low end, and it is certainly 'dead sexy'.
But the Turbo has the potential to be more car, especially when you start wanting the inevitable more power. Either way, you will start a love affair.
I drive a turbo daily, and really the only complaint that I could come up with is a wish for a magic tranny so I could have my 5 speed replaced with an auto in stop and go traffic. Not that I want an auto, but rowing gets old unless you can open the throttle a bit.
As much as it pains me, I gotta say 968, simply for the fact that they are like Bigfoot sightings, rare and thrilling.

When you are on track, you'll wish you had the 951. When you putt around with your daily chores, you'll wish you had the 968. Take your pick..

Thanks for the replies.....pretty much what I was already thinking, but I wanted to hear from those using the 951 everyday.
If I could afford both, that would be sweet, but I'm trying to reduce my monthly car outlay, and that's why I'm selling my Boxster and looking at 951's and 968's.
Thanks.

Going from a new Boxster, I would think a 951 would seem like an antique to you sooner than a 968 would, if you care about those kinda things!
I vote for the 968--rare, updated, and fast. Problem is finding one!

Although she is totally apart at the moment ( I put in a new turbocharger, vacuum kit, idle stabilizer lines, and changed heater hoses while waiting for MAP system for over a month and a half), Baby was and will be again my daily driver. She has been doing this for over 11 years, although while in the New England area she did get snow days offs.
Admittedly, I have never driven a 968; however, boost is very addicting and definitely a kick. Even on the worst of days she puts a smile on my face. While not as rare as the 968, you will not see many of them during your daily commute. My major issue is tires (8k-10K the most). But then again that is not really her fault. (Demons live under the hood)

It depends on what kind of driving your daily drive consists of. I drive my 951 daily (but not during winter), mostly on the highway. The 968 won't come close to delivering the kind of acceleration you get at highway speeds with the 951. However, in stop and go driving (city), the 968 would be the choice because of its low-end torque and no turbo lag.

I've been using my '88 951 on my daily commute of 20 miles highway for the past 6 months. It's been very good to me, considering that I've been rather inattentive to it's needs (that's changing real fast).
Around town, it works pretty well, although the long gears can be a little frustrating in traffic. I've gotten used to this, and accept it as my compromise.
I would think that the difference in price between the 951s and the 968 would make the decision easier, but that's just my opinion.
Whatever you decide, enjoy it.

I have a stock 88 Turbo S.
Great car. It is not my daily driver. I have 20 mile commute that is mostly freeway. Only problem is that it is mostly stop and go freeway vs open freeway. I had putting the turbo through that. The car is happiest at 70-80 crusing along. It will go through stop and go ok, but since there is little power below 3000 rpm it will feel like a dog unless you stop on it a little. Then you stomp on it and have to immdiatly hit the brakes again. Frustraing for me.
So I have 01 VW GTI for daily driver duties. It has much better low end torque inspite of less over all power.
A 968 or even a 944S2 is probably much better as daily driver if you have to deal with stop and go traffic due the more instant power and low end torque. If you have smooth no-stop route to work then A turbo S will be fine.
On the track both cars are great although I'd give the edge to the turbo for fun. The turbo S is best stock track 4cyl car Porsche made and sold in the US. (968 CS and 968 Turbo S may be better).
