Default Safest way to jack up the rear

I always assumed that jacking the car up under the transmission was ok, but after reading a few posts i learned that is not safe to do. Im wondering where is the best place to jack the car up to get it on jackstands? I just finished painting the calipers on the front of the car, and the jackstands i was using left a impression in the asphault where the sides dug in. I guess i didnt exactly have the car jacked up evenly.....i hope my parents dont see it . Anyway i am probably gonna paint the rear calipers either tomorrow and saturday and just wanted to make sure i dont mess anything up.

I usually put a piece of wood under the jackstands to prevent damaging whatever surface they're resting on.

If I'm not in a rush to get the rear in the air fast, I'll lift one side...put it on stands, then left the other side. If I'm in a rush I'll use the transmission, but will be gentle with it.

For jack points I use the obvious, the donuts in the front behind the wheels and the rectangular things in front of the rear wheels. I've never had any problems. The car feels very stable.

Credit to Rich Sandor...I recollect that he posted a pic of the underside jack points...and here it is:

It was very useful reference for me when I started learning how to work on my car.

Adrial et al, I've heard the front donuts behind the wheels is subject to distorting the floorpan above it. Safer to use the inner rails as in Rich' pic. But be sure to use a long piece of 2x4 wood to distribute the load over the pump jack, else you will pinch the rail.

Yeah those front "donuts" WILL distort the floor pan. I've seen far too many 944s lke that when under them on the lift at work.

Why would Porsche make something a jack point when it does damage to the car? ....

I think the distortion you guys have seen is due to mis-aligning the jack stand/jack.

My floorboards are fine and my car was on jackstands on the doughnuts for three months last winter.

Apparently, they (the donuts) are to support the body in the factory until it gets mated to the running gear.
