Default Custom balance shaft end seal

I noticed that every 944/951/968 sooner or later leaks at the O rings at the end of balance shafts. The design of those seals is so poor it makes me wonder what were they thinking.

I recently found a nice custom seal shop, and we made few tests and few prototype seals and end up with this beauty. It is made of first grade DuPont Viton rubber (not the mixed cheaper one) and should be permanent no leak solution to the stupid O ring.

What do you think?

That looks awesome! If we set up a group buy, how much would a pair of these cost?

I recall that early and late engines use different size o-rings.

I have been thinking that a lot recently. I would be interested as well.

Yes they are - so please make sure you offer both sizes!

Good stuff.

all they need to do is compress. I personally would have wanted it a little over sized with grooves.

We made grooved example but it is not good as there is not enough space and it only reduces the available seal surface. The seal fits in very snug, it has to be pressed in with some force. Also viton is not as soft as bunaN rubber, so getting it on or off aluminum plug requires some soap, oil or silicone lubricant.

Price for individual seal is $25. I only have had one made for now.

If I order 30 seals, price would drop to $15 per seal, $30 per pair.

I would need group of 10 buyers to make this happen.

I do not have early block at my disposal so I can not design a seal off of it. If someone would take accurate measurements, it could be done.

Worldwide mail with tracking for pair should be in ~$5 range.

Very nice work! I would be in for a set.

One question about the third picture down. Can't tell if it's lighting or if the seal is torn. Can see some pressure is being applied to the lip of the seal which looks like it has torn/separated from the body of the seal.

??

It is combination of dirt and talc, I wiped it before photo shoot, but not good enough Its not torn off, this material is quite resilient. You can scratch it with sharp things, but otherwise very strong stuff.

I have an early engine apart right now. Which measurements do you need? I have an accurate digital caliper, but it might be good to get a 2nd set of measurements from someone as well.

I'm in for a pair but am not sure if my 86 motor is early or late. I assume early but not sure

The inner and outer diameter of the hole without plug and inner diameter of plug, plus how far can the flap part protrude in the inside.

Measure absolute values and Ill ask the shop how much they add for seal compression.

Would be good if two different measures are taken before I actually order them.

Cyberpunky: 86 is late. Every car made after 85.5 is late. All late cars have oval dashboards, flush seal around windshield, fuse box under the hood etc.

Actually, PET states that from 83-86 the seal is the first design, and from 87-95 the seal is the second design. So I believe '86 is early seal.

Strange. Can you measure the hole size without the plug, my block is from 89 turbo so it is definitely late design. I would like to compare the sizes..
