Default Gearbox weights - NA/Turbo

Anyone know if the NA gearboxes are any lighter than the turbos? Seems turbo guys won't touch the NA gearboxes, as they are thought to be less tough. Not arguing that, but does anyone have the weights of each? Wondering if the NA box may be lighter than the turbo box.

Ok, lets take some guesses here. I will say I am a bit shocked. (lets just put the range from 105-135lbs for guessing purposes). All weighed with gear oil in them, shifters attached, but no coupler on the input shaft).

1st tranny is an early, open NA tranny.
2nd tranny is an S2 open diff
3rd tranny is an 87 LSD turbo trans.

117 is what I also got for the open NA. 123 for the open S2, 127 for the turbo lsd.

Seems reasonable with the S2/951 ring gear being a little bit bigger.

A lot of stuff packed into a lightweight box.

I just shipped a turbo LSD transaxle, in the box ready to ship the whole package was 137ish pounds, under the 140# cut off for Fedex.

+1

I did the same a couple months ago.
I shipped a 5P with the trans cooler and lsd installed, came to 139 but I shipped it in a rubbermaid tote with expanding foam and straps holding the lid shut.

Here are some fun facts:

The turbo transmission case is 4mm longer, so in addition to the case having more material, the steel shafts are also a little longer (and have more material).

The turbo transmissions have a larger fluid volume.

The turbo transmission has "stronger bearings" - but I don't know what makes them stronger... if it's just a material change or a size change. (They have different p/ns in PET.)

The turbo gear sets are stronger and different ratios - I don't know if this changes the weight of the components.

The turbo final drive (ring and pinion) is stronger and a different ratio. I know the tooth profile is larger, but there are fewer teeth, so I don't know how that effects weight.

The turbos also have a stronger differential - but, that's from forged spider gears, so I don't think that changes the weight.

The cooler components, e.g. gear pump, drive gear and tubing, will also add a little weight.

Actually, it is 150#
I prepped and sold two LSD transmissions with custom crates right under 150lbs

No, it was under the 140# cut off and it was dry, no fluids. I sent it in a big tote strapped to a plywood floor.

I think he means the shipping cutoff - UPS ground will take 150# so FedEx probably does too.
