Default Mad vibrations after front wheel bearing job

Now this sucks. I had annoying noise coming from the right side when turning left, figured out it was the front wheel bearing (thanks to you guys!), went out and got new bearings (inner & outer) and replaced them yesterday... the noise went away, hooray!, but now I'm getting nasty vibrations (richter scale 7.4 I'd say) when going over 90km/h ...

Soo; is it possible (or even likely) that I've somehow screwed that bearing job and that's what's causing this, or would there be some other clues going on as well if that was the case (the car goes & turns quietly) ..?

Funny thing about the vibration is that in some speeds it's very pronounced on the steering wheel, and in some others it only feels on my butt... wouldn't that suggest that it's in fact coming from the rear..?

I guess I'll have to take the wheels to be balanced first, but I have a very bad feeling that it's not going to solve anything...

So the reason the wheel bearings went south was the bent rim.

sounds to me that your wheels are running true now.. bad wear on the tires? did you do an alignment with bad wheel bearings?....

Maybe the bearings are not adjusted tight enough? Check if there is lateral play in the bearings: remove the wheel and preferably the brake caliper, grab the disc with both hands, and try twisting (to mimic the action of the steering wheel). Rotate the wheel a bit, and repeat the test, etc. If there is any play - tighten the bearing nut. Good luck, Stan

Alignment was last done a few months ago, not sure how good the bearings were back then but at least they weren't making noise...

Bad tire wear, man .. I've got bad tire wear.... but I blame it on rather aggressive track driving

I'll have to try tightening them tomorrow.

If, for some reason, I didn't quite get either one of the bearing races (inner/outer) inserted properly, what would happen? I did beat them in very thoroughly and checked that they were nicely in there, but it's one of those things that I'm still doubting slightly...

Timkin (tapered roller) wheel bearings have to have some play. The keyed thrust washer behind the spindle nut has to have some movement when levered with the tip of a screw driver. Other wise you burn up the bearings.

Vibration is worn tire and/or bent rim. I would guess both.

Try a front to rear straight tire swap.. If you can and then see what happens..? not sure of your offset and stuff.. Bad wear is HUGE>>> The fact that you are asking about inner race insertion questions ussually means you had problems? They need to be put in all the way and flat to the race backing.. If you question this.. you need to pull the wheels and make SURE they are all the way installed... This would indicate inner race failure... spun races will kill the rotor....

When mine was too loose I could tell by grabbing the tire (still on the ground) and move the top in and out or side to side hands at 9 and 3'oclock and feel the loosness.

Vibration in the seat is from the rear end.

Do you know if the wheels were reinstalled in the same postion on the hubs?

I've had vibrations that you'd swear were mechanical wear of some sort, and found that rotating the wheel on the hub really can make a difference, even if the tire and wheel are perfectly balanced.

If one of your front wheel studs has red paint on it, try rotating the wheel so that the valve stem is aligned with that stud. Sounds rediculous but I've dealt with it a couple of time, even with brand new tires and a fresh balance, and it works..

Hope it's that simple...

Tried some simple troubleshooting today; swapped 16" spare wheels in front (which I know to be in good balance) ... and presto, the damn vibration is gone!! So apparently I didn't screw up with the bearings...

Gotta take the 18's to a tire shop for balancing tomorrow. I'm really hoping they're straight... if not, well, **** happens - I'm sure there's a shop somewhere that can fix them ... I hope ... not possible to afford new ones even if they were available (apparently they've discontinued this model).

Here's a pic of my very trendy current setup

Sami,
there's a shop in Järvenpää which can help you if your wheel is bent.

Olli - good to know, I'll most probably call you tomorrow after I've had the wheels checked / balanced ...
