Default 1986 951 rear wheel offset, will a 17mm offset wheel fit?

Okay guys, I have looked through the archives, I know that a 1986 951 has the 23 mm offset for the fronts, but what about the rears?

I have the chance to aquire some Borbet Cup wheels, the front offset is 23mm, so far so good. The rears are 17mm, will they fit witout spacers? Thank you kindly for any help.

I do not believe that they will clear the rear calipers with out spacers. Can some one verify that?

don't the 1986 951s have spacers in the rear stock? I will be picking up a new red 1986 951 tomorrow with phonedials, I really want to freshen up the look with the cups. Anybody know for sure if they will clear?

a 17mm offset would give you even more room, vs. a 23mm. them fitting depends on backspacing and width, as well as offset. what width are they?

255 tires are on the sheel, so I'm assuming that they are 9"... these wheels are cup replicas cast by Borbet.

When you mean more room, is that out towards the fender or in towards the center of the car?

A 17mm offset will push the wheel's centerline outwards by 6mm compared to the stock 23.3mm offset. If the wheels are the same width, then this would give you more room on the inside and less room on the outside.

I'm quite sure that the offset doesn't necessarily have anything to do with how the wheel fits over the brake caliper. Offset just tells you how the position of the rim (the part that the tire mounts on), specifically the centerline, relates to the mounting surface of the wheel. This, in and of itself, has no relation to the brake caliper.

That being said, whether or not the wheels will fit depends on a variety of things:

First off, the bolt patter, which I assume you have already checked.
The offset
The width of the rim

We really can't tell you anything until you give us the width.

The 6 mm difference in offset (about 0.25") is pretty small. However, we need the rim width!

1986 NA 944's came with no spacers in the rear. I assume the same is true of turbos. I've always assumed the reason they stopped using the spacers in 1986 was to accommodate the 8" rims on the rear of the turbos.

They are 9" in width, the owner has 255s on them, he mentioned that they were for a 1978 911 with fender flares. So basically the the wheel is 1" wider than the stock 8" wheels.

So then does the 17mm offset will accomodates the extra 1" wheel width?

FWIW, I and several other people are running 9's in the back. Many are going wider. When I was contemplating rims I think I remember someone telling me that 17mm was okay. Do you have a chance to fit them before buying?

don't have the chance to, just picked up a new Indish Rot 951 (god this car looks hot) today after selling the black one. I did stop by Wheel Enhancement www.wheelenhancement.com in Culver City and asked for a quote on C2 turbo wheels, he said they usally go 15mm on the rears for the 1986 951s. I don't think 2mm would make that much of a difference, would it?

In fact my rears are 15mm. 2 more doesn't seem like much. May have to step down to 245's.
