Good Afternoon,
I sold my old Volvo 740 Wagon (aka knight rider) to my brother in law for his son to drive. The car died last night and the dealership said it would cost $880 to replace the fuel pump. (Kiss afterwards was NOT included!) Well, he called me to see if it was too high. I said, why YES, YES IT IS.
To make a short story long. I am going to replace it for them to save about $600. I have an old manual from my tenure as owner, but I was curious if there is a Volvo forum that has the same intellectual capacity as Rennlist.

It's the one in the tank. The dealership wants to replace the "combo" for $515 for the part. The pump is was they indicated was wrong. The fuel guage is good, so I am going to just replace the pump. I was just reading turbobricks.org. Those guys are just as nuts as Rennlist! (I wouldn't mind a 760 Turbo Wagon as a daily driver.) I love wolves in sheep clothing.
I will look at the next site you've given. I appreciate the help!

I'm a big fan of both those volvo sites myself since I have 2 bricks.
FYI: There are a couple of really good indie volvo mechanics in Atlanta if you're looking for a second opinion or someone to do the work.
If you're going to do the repair yourself, Swedish Engineering in Marrietta has very good parts prices (they also do mail order). I have had very good experience ordering for them. Their prices have been significantly less than the dealer on everything I have purchased.

Talk about highway robbery ! IPD (www.ipdusa.com) has a tool to take off the bayonet fastener on the top of the tank (to get to the pre-pump). That's the only special tool you will need. If you are handy you can make your own tool. In addition to the tool and pre-pump you will likely need the sock that goes on the pump pickup and perhaps a short piece of hose. --Roy--

When I worked in a "Z" shop I had a friend who's father owned a Volvo shop on Hwy 5 in Marietta. They won't be able to look at it until next week if I chose to not do the work. They also didn't have the part either. The more I read about the car, the more I think it has the regina fuel inj system.
I told him he could drive my Accord if I get the 951 back on the road tomorrow. (Trans left output shaft seal took a dump.)
I will call Swedish Engineering tomorrow. There was another shop down in Atlanta that used to race the "volvos from hell" in the SCCA. (ITC class I think)
