Porsche has an awd 944 in their storage facility in germany. Along with a host of other prototype 944s.

Omg no

Stupid jackasses ruining good salvageable cars. Stupid comments too... "Maybe the interior was ruined.. maybe the engine was done"... so? Like thousands of us on this very forum haven't taken a great body and turned the rest into gold and swapped in an LS1 engine and some nice seats. Very doubtful the exteriors were that immaculate and the interiors were just crap anyway though.

The Factory AWD car was rear engine, and IIRC used a version of the 016 trans. The transaxle was bolted directly to the motor in pretty much the same location it is in our cars, but had a shaft running to a modified audi front diff. It would be extremely difficult to build a front engine AWD 944 because the engine would have to be entirely in front of the front axle to allow for the half shafts. Not to mention that the tranny would have to be bolted directly to the motor which would require some pretty serious tranny tunnel mods.

If I was going to build an AWD 944, I would copy the drive train layout of the GTR, but I dont think that would be possible with VW parts. The GTR is the only front engine, rear tranny AWD car I'm aware of, and for anyone who hasnt seen it, it basically uses a twin shaft system with a pretty complicated integral transmission/"center diff" mounted in front of the actual rear differential. The motor sends torque to it via a shaft, which is sent to the rear diff via gears. The center diff sends torque to the front diff via a parallel shaft slightly to the right of the main shaft. The motor sits directly on top of the front diff. Its all fairly complicated but works well and preserves the handling of the car. I wonder where I could find a transmission like this? One could then probably just mate it to a modified audi rear diff in the front of the car.
