Default Phone dial wheel cleanup and 924S brake question

The wheels on my 924S are stained from the brake dust, it appears. Maybe my search skills need improvement but I couldn't find any threads on what the best method is to clean these up. The owners manual states soap (less than 10 pH) and water and occasionally coat with petroleum jelly. How do I get the black stains off without damaging the wheel? Also, the brakes squeak badly and will be replacing the brakes and rotors (~ 19 mm thicknesses) later this summer, but is there a pad spreader leaf spring that is missing from mine?

Yes, you're missing "springs" that keeps the pads pushed down.

That looks like its in the paint and may be starting to pit, sand/blast them down and repaint. I had to do that with a set of Dials I had. They turned out pretty well, though it did take some man hours to get them done.

What I started with and 2 of them blasted and sanded.


One done.


Done and on the car.

Default I use paste wax

Excellent question. Some brake pads generate more dust than others.

I don't believe the phone dials are painted, just brushed aluminum. I also read the petroleum jelly thing and tried it a few times. What were they thinking? Finally I tried paste wax and that seems to be the best I've found so far--dirt doesn't stick to it and the wheels are easier to clean with mild soap (as in not stripping off the wax) and water. The wax buffs up to a nice shine.

If they are stained now I might try some metal polish for aluminum but I have no experience with it. Good luck.

Hicks, thanks for the confirmation. I just finished the front end seals, water pump and belts then took it in for its state inspections. The car's been in storage for a year and a quarter because of the oil cooler seal failure. My son had been using the car and I used the brake squeal to know when he got home, even if I was asleep. I'm using the car now and need to park in the garage without waking my wife. I was amazed at the emission test results, this car failed it a couple years ago and I had to remove the air cleaning to get the idle tests to pass. Now it passes with flying colors.


Arominus, your wheels turned out quite nice. My wife wanted to know about the coloration of the Porsche center logo. Our wheels aren't colored, did you paint those when you redid the rest of the wheels?

All dials are painted from the factory. I did paint the crests by hand using model paint and then clearing over the top. I used duplicolor wheel paint for the wheels them selves and same for the clear coat.

Arominus, a "...clearing over the top" means a clear coat, I assume. When I first read your post I thought you owned a Kia, but realized it meant the 924S is no longer with us. My condolences. It would have been my condolences also if you owned a Kia. Just kidding. Steve

I just got mine powder coated. Very simple process, just hand the fellow $320.

powder coating looks sexeh. I took one of those green scrubber pads and a bucket of simple green and water mix (1:1 I think) and then scrubbed. I was tempted to attack some of the harder stuff with steel wool but the green scrubber pad and my elbow grease seemed to do pretty well.

If you want a DD clean that you can enjoy the green pad works and is cheap. If you want them back to new condition, powder coating is perfect.
