Default Bought an 86 today

Saw the ad for the car online and went and bought this nice 86 today. Got it home and though it has new timing and balance shaft belts, it appears that the timing belt has jumped a tooth and the valves have come in contact with the pistons. The timing belt is intact and feels as if it has proper tension.. However, the previous owner stated that he had the belts and water pump replaced 15,000 miles ago, but never had the belt tension checked after the initial install. I see evidence that he is telling the truth as the water pump and belts do look new. The compression results are as follows:

#1: 85psi
#2: 85psi
#3 35psi
#4 0psi

So, I'm thinking that the valves are trashed and hoping the pistons are not destroyed. I got a decent deal on the car considering. The paint is really really nice, the interior while dirty is complete and everything, including the original Blaupunkt stereo and sunroof works. There is ZERO rust on the car and the car came with a clear title.

I have my work cut out for me this time, especially with my early 85 M456 car in the middle of a restoration. This car has only a few options to include sunroof, sway bars, rear wiper, and 30mm raised hub steering wheel. Here are some pics of the car as it sits in my garage:

What kind of front valence is that? At first I though it was Euro, but it looks aftermarket.

Also, I have a head if you want it for cheap. https://rennlist.com/forums/924-931-...d-8v-head.html

Congrats! Looks like a nice car and fun project.

The front bumper looks very much like a Fiberwerks early version without the lip at the bottom. The EVO-1 as they called it, I think.

Sounds like the head's going to have to come off. Inspect for damage to the piston tops. Pretty sure the valves on #3 and #4 are bent or broken off. The extent of the damage can only be known after it's been pulled. Very nice car. The repair's a little involved but it sounds like you're able to do the wrenching and a head shop can rebuild the necessary aspects of the damage. You'll love the car after it's fixed.

Even if the pistons are dinged, your fine, they would have to be cracked and i don't think that really happens. Clean up any burrs on the piston where they contacted and call it good. Get those valves replaced and your done.

Thanks for the compliments guys!! I really like this car and plan to get it back on the road. My only dilemma is this:

I have a good running and driving 944 that I have no title for. I could just take the entire engine out of it and install it in this 86 and be good to go. After I pull the engine, it would become a parts car and I really hate to do that, especially considering its an M456 car. I could use plenty of the parts though and sell the rest. I guess if the demand for the parts were high enough, I would do that. Gives me quite a bit to think about..

If I may ask, how much was it?
I really like the color combination.
I recently bought a 86 951 for $7K, and am keeping track of current prices.

I paid $1000 for the car. Non running with bent valves. Clear title.

So, the PO had, but lost, the title? Can you not apply for a new title? Does OH not re-issue titles?

The previous owner refuses to mail me the title. He has been messing around for over a month. I'm not sure if Ohio will issue a title without a current title available.

Can you get a bonded title?

Whoa. Why is this?

Title should've been signed/handed over at time/point of sale. Did you ever see him sign the tile? If not, the car could still legally be his.

Do you have a bill of sale signed by the PO? If not, I imagine that could potentially cause you all sorts of legal trouble, down the road. E.g. previous owner, "officer, my car was stolen..."

At this point, unless you know more to the contrary, I would do nothing with the car [strip it or otherwise] until this issue is cleared up. Just my opinion...

I traded the guy a car for the guards red 85 and the title was not notarized, so no titles were exchanged. I left my car and took his and he has been lazy in sending the title. He gets the title to my car when I get the title to the guards red 85. I can be patient to an extent and then I will go drop the Porsche off and pick my car up.

Send "Guido, the Adjuster" to get your title.

Went out and took some more pics of the car today and wanted to share.

Replaced the right door handle. It had a non script handle on it and I happened to have a spare to match the original driver's side script handle:

Cleaned the interior a little:

Newly reupholstered driver's seat:

Original 30mm raised hub steering wheel:

The front bumper is growing on me:

Non original car key but original wheel lock key. Unfortunately the wheel locks have been drilled out long ago:

Original rear carpet with sunroof bag and cargo shade:

Options sticker:

Pic of the engine:
