Default Transmission Mount question

First off I did a search and no one that I found had similar symptoms.

I went to 944 Fest this weekend and the car did great (Thanks Elliot), however I noticed on my way home that I was getting a lot of resonance from the exhaust that was never there before and that when I let off the gas while cruising that it was not as smooth. I was also able to here a lot more gear noise (nothing bad sounding). I crawled under the car and pulled on the gear box and it normally moves fairly freely, however now it is very stiff feeling. Does this sound like my trans mount went out?

Just an FYI.
I have newer OE engine mounts in the car last 10-15 k miles.
All suspension is newer within the same time frame.

your gearbox shouldn't move that easily

Maybe the mount went out and the weight of the torque tube is laying on the torsion housing.

Thanks Doc. I will check that when I am able to pull the car on some ramps.

Thanks Paully, when I say easily, I mean relative to now. If you grab the trans and man handle it it will move a good bit. Just like good engine mounts you can move the engines on certain cars by grabbing it. Very relative.

With the stock-style late 944 trans mount you can grab the trans tail with one hand and wiggle it an inch or so side to side.

I'm with Doc, it might be caught up on the torque tube now.

Do the "semi-solid" mount mod and enjoy the stiff transmission and better shifting.

I went out to the garage and put the car on the ramps during my lunch break. All looks ok, however the ears on the torque tube and the torsion carrier on lining up anymore. It appears the trans axle is over to the rt. more than the left. It isn't off by a lot, but off none the less. It is far from tounching the torsion carrier however.

Does this confirm mount, do you need pics? I am going to check everything else, but so far everything seems fine.

Check the bellhousing bolts that secure the trans to the TT, also check the 4 bolts that bolt the TT to the clutch bellhousing.

It they aren't aligned the splines will wear down and shear, ask me how I know

Will do, however the trans and torque tube have not been touched in 10 years and 50 k miles.
